The team behind the critically acclaimed medieval city builder Manor Lords continues to add new features to help players grow their kingdoms further, and one such feature is fishing. If you're wondering how it works, here's our handy Manor Lords fishing guide to get you started.
How to unlock Fishing feature in Manor Lords
Fishing is a gameplay feature that is currently available via the experimental Beta Patch 0.7.987 for PC players. Anyone who has Manor Lords purchased and downloaded on Steam can participate. Unfortunately, this experimental patch is not currently available for those playing on Xbox consoles (Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S).
Also, it's highly recommended that you remove any mods from your game to avoid "interference" with these beta features.
To participate in the beta patch test, follow these steps:
- Open Steam
- Right-click on Manor Lords in your library
- Select 'Properties'
- Go to the BETAS tab
- Enter the following password: veryNiceBasket
- Choose "pre_release" from the "Beta participation" drop-down list
- Wait for the game to update the files (if nothing happens, restart the Steam client)
- Launch the game
This will allow you to try out the game's fishing feature among other new additions such as Salt nodes and food spoilage, along with updates to graphics, lighting, and sounds.
How to fish in Manor Lords
Fishing is a feature in Manor Lords that functions similarly to hunting and berry picking. Depending on where you start a new save file, a Fishing node will spawn in a random region on the world map. If you want access to it right away, simply restart a new save file until the node spawns in your starting region.
The node itself is a large pond, typically in a wooded area of the region, and represented by a blue fish icon (seen in the screenshot above). To make use of it, you'll need to build a Fisherman's Hut, which you can find in the 'Gathering' tab between the Forager's Hut and the Apiary.
This type of development is available from the very start of a new save and only requires 2x logs to be built, so you can get one going in no time at all. As you should, because fishing nodes are an excellent supplementary source of food for your settlement. It can help fill the gaps when your hunting nodes (wild animals) run low, or if you find yourself in a wild berry shortage or your farm fields need to recover.
Make sure to employ at least one family at your Fisherman's Hut, build proper roads, and have a Granary and/or a Marketplace in relative walking distance, so you can make use of your fish hauls to feed your residents. Also, since food spoilage is a challenge to keep in mind, make sure to upgrade your Granaries, so that spoilage happens less often, allowing your food stocks to stay as high as possible.
If you want to keep your fish stock going all year round, you'll need to unlock Winter Fishing on the left side of your Development wheel (as seen above). This allows your fishermen to cut holes in the frozen pond and continue to collect fish from beneath the ice. You can use the very first Development Point you receive to do this if you want.
