After spending (too) much time with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge and Absolum, I was ready to jump into Marvelverse and face some of the most infamous villains from comics. As with every other classic arcade beat 'em up, here you can choose between multiple fighters with different styles. Tribute Games built Marvel Cosmic Invasion around a tag team combat system where two-hero synergy is everything -- knowing who to bring against Annihilus' forces can be the difference between clearing a stage cleanly and burning through all your lives. To make it easier to choose the best fighters, we've created the Marvel Cosmic Invasion characters tier list.

Character ranking is based on how hard it is to play with them, their ability to face multiple enemies, the effectiveness of their skills, and their all-around power. It's fair to say that every character is more or less fun to play with, but some require a really good partner to minimize their flaws.

Personal preference also played a role, as I tend to value characters that are easy to handle and provide instant offense. One thing I want to flag upfront: this ranking focuses on on-field performance. Some characters (like She-Hulk and Rocket Raccoon) are arguably more useful as assist characters than their tier placement suggests -- I'll note those cases in each entry.

Before diving into the breakdown, it helps to understand one mechanic that separates the truly elite characters from the rest: parry vs. dodge. Characters with a parry can counter enemy attacks for a brief invulnerability window and often trigger powerful passive bonuses. Characters with only a dodge can still be excellent, but parry adds a layer of safety and DPS that makes a real difference on harder difficulties and boss fights. Each entry below notes which mechanic the character uses.

S Tier - Best Ranked Superheroes in Marvel Cosmic Invasion

Superheroes from this list can be used against all types of enemies, as they're fully capable of taking them down on their own. You won't need to swap characters often, as S-tier heroes give you everything you need to complete the stage. That said, not all characters are available from the start -- you must first unlock Phyla-Vell and Silver Surfer by progressing through the campaign. Silver Surfer in particular is the final unlock, earned by completing the Fort Galactus mission.

CharacterDescription
Cosmic Ghost Rider from Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Cosmic Ghost Rider
+ Cosmic Ghost Rider is the best all-around fighter with strong short and long-range attacks
+ Best long-range attack -- can fire 10 missiles
+ Can hit both ground and air enemies with his basic attack
+ Chain pull drags enemies in "Get over here!" Scorpion-style and generates bonus ammo on a successful pull
- Uses dodge instead of parry -- some community members argue this keeps him out of the very top spot
- Ranking is genuinely debated: Steam and Reddit communities are split between S and A for CGR
Phyla-Vell Cosmic Invasion
Phyla-Vell
+ Teleport Slash (throwable Quantum Sword) enables extended combos and instant gap-closing
+
Very effective Downward Slash attack
+
Excellent aerial mobility -- one of the few melee characters who can fly and juggle enemies
+
Charged parry triggers a cosmic-powered counterswipe and builds meter faster thanks to her Level 5 passive
- Requires more effort to reach peak output than simpler S-tier characters
- Must be unlocked midway through the campaign
Silver Surfer character in Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Silver Surfer
+ Fastest character in the game
+ Dominant air combat -- cosmic-powered combos rip through mob clusters from a safe distance
+ Excellent melee range
+ Parry mechanic triggers bonus cosmic damage on counterattacks thanks to his Level 5 passive
+ Very effective special that covers a large part of the screen
- Last character unlocked in the game -- you'll clear most of the campaign before getting him
Venom Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Venom
+ Symbiote Wrecking Ball attack demolishes flying enemies
+ Symbiote Shark attack damages both ground and flying units
+ Can grab and slam enemies -- great for crowd control and pit kills
- A bit slower than other fighters
- Uses dodge rather than parry

A Tier - Fantastic Fighters, But Need a Good Teammate

In A-tier, you'll find some of the best fighters in the game that do require a good teammate to cover their gaps. They all lack something, forcing you to swap between characters depending on the situation. For example, Wolverine is my favorite character because he's fast and deadly, but when enemies start shooting or attacking from the air, I tend to switch to a ranged-focused character. Worth noting: three of the four A-tier heroes (Phoenix, Storm, Captain America) have a parry, which gives them a defensive edge over many B-tier picks.

CharacterDescription
Phoenix Jean Gray Cosmic Invasion
Phoenix
+ Phoenix has the best special in the game
+ Great crowd control character thanks to multiple moves -- her flaming dash can be spammed to rack up combo multipliers fast
+ Can grab and throw enemies from afar -- one of only a handful of characters with a ranged grab, making her lethal near pits
+ Has a parry -- her Level 5 passive imbues her dash and aerial attacks with flames after a full meter
- Ranged grab must be recharged
- Must be unlocked through campaign progress
Captain America in Cosmic Invasion game
Captain America
+ Homing shield is the only ranged attack in the game that requires no recharge whatsoever
+ Has a parry -- deflects projectiles and his Level 5 passive increases duo attack damage, making him one of the best team players in the game
+ Excellent movement speed
+ Good melee range
- Average special, doesn't attack flying enemies
- Burst damage falls behind in harder difficulties
Wolverine Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Wolverine
+ Best close-combat fighter, capable of executing powerful combos -- hitting a 100-hit combo in the first few levels is not hard at all
+ Fantastic close-combat range
+ Can grab and throw enemies
+ Level 5 passive speeds up his health regeneration significantly
- Uses dodge instead of parry -- would be S-tier with a parry
- Lacks ranged options
- Struggles against flying enemies
Storm X-Men Cosmic Invasion
Storm
+ Special attack covers the entire screen -- one of the best screen-clearing ultimates in the game
+ Has a parry
+ Excellent aerial movement -- can stay above danger zones while raining damage below
+ Deals shock damage for strong crowd control
- Lacks good close-range melee options
- Arctic Wind ranged attack has only three charges

B Tier - Secondary Team Options

Superheroes in B-tier are great as "plan B" options when you need them to handle what your main fighter can't -- whether that's flying enemies, ranged pressure, or simply the raw brute force of She-Hulk. A key note here: She-Hulk performs significantly better as an assist character than her on-field tier placement might suggest. Her basic attack assist call deals massive damage and removes her biggest weakness -- slow movement -- since assist characters teleport directly to the enemy.

CharacterDescription
Black Panther Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Black Panther
+ Quick attacks and precise hit timing -- plays similarly to Leonardo in Shredder's Revenge
+ Very fast movement -- his tackle assist also sets up combo extensions for ranged characters like Rocket
+ Can throw poison daggers at enemies
- Can throw only three poison daggers before recharging
- Punch has a short range -- feels underwhelming compared to the flashier S and A-tier roster
Beta Ray Bill in Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Beta Ray Bill
+ Very strong attacks -- wailing with his fists while Mjolnir bonks enemies separately makes him a multi-range threat
+ Hammer acts as a homing projectile and can rotate in place
+ Very efficient dash attack
- Hammer must be recharged (only three uses per charge)
- Very slow fighter -- gets interrupted mid-combo regularly in chaotic waves
- Uses dodge instead of parry, which would suit his playstyle much better
She Hulk Marvel Cosmic Invasion
She-Hulk
+ She-Hulk is the strongest fighter in the game for raw damage output
+ Can grab and throw enemies
+ Her basic attack assist deals massive damage and is one of the best assist calls in the game -- consider using her off-field
- Very slow movement speed on the field
- Limited range capabilities
Nova superhero from Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Nova
+ Solid ranged attacks -- his assorted beams hit hard both up close and from a distance
+ Great option if you need to control the air -- can fly and stay mobile
+ Level 5 passive buffs his ranged attacks after using his special
- Jack-of-all-trades who doesn't clearly excel in any single category
- Special takes time to activate
Iron Man Cosmic Invasion
Iron Man
+ Dive punch AoE damage is great for crowd control
+ Repulsor blast is an efficient ranged option
+ Has a parry -- his Level 5 passive grants temporary infinite repulsor ammo after a successful parry, which is a game-changer on projectile-heavy bosses like Hela
+ Electrical orb charge attack controls space in a novel way
- Repulsor blast must be recharged when not in parry-activated mode
- Basic melee attack has a limited range -- clunky until his mechanics click

C Tier - Special Task Fighters

Fighters from C-tier can be fun to play with, depending on which stage you play and who you choose as a main fighter in the tag team. It's worth pointing out that Rocket Raccoon's C-tier placement is one of the most debated rankings in the community -- his on-field game is limited, but his grenade screen control, long-reach basic attack, aerial pogo combo, and assist calls make him a genuinely strong off-field partner. If you plan to use Rocket mostly as an assist rather than your primary fighter, bump his value up considerably.

CharacterDescription
Rocket Raccoon Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Rocket Raccoon
+ Solid ranged offensive moves -- one of the longest-reaching base attacks in the game
+ Special has a good range
+ Grenade screen control and aerial pogo combo make him a strong assist character -- many community members rate him much higher in an assist-focused context
- Weak in close-range combat when played on the field
- Has difficulty dealing with flying enemies on the field
- C-tier rating applies to on-field performance specifically
Spider-Man from MCI
Spider-Man
+ Fast movement -- his agility makes him hard to pin down
+ Webbings slow down enemies, and he gets instant web canister refills after a successful dodge
- Lacks standout moves. Other characters have better offensive options across the board
- Swings are mostly useless offensively (unlike Venom's Symbiote Shark and Wrecking Ball)
NOTE: I really expected more from Spider-Man as he's arguably the most popular Marvel character in the world. His crowd-control utility as a support tag partner is his best use case.

Best Tag Teams in Marvel Cosmic Invasion - Team Comps List

Choosing the right tag team combination is crucial for success in Marvel Cosmic Invasion. The best teams cover each other's weaknesses while maximizing their combined strengths. A good rule of thumb: pair a faster on-field character with a slower but harder-hitting assist, and always make sure your team covers both ground and air threats. Here are the optimal two-fighter combinations:

What Are The Best Starting Characters in Marvel Cosmic Invasion?

If you're new to Marvel Cosmic Invasion, start with these characters:

  1. Captain America - Reliable and balanced with unlimited ranged attacks and a parry to keep you safe
  2. Venom - Powerful and forgiving, great for learning combat mechanics and tag team swapping
  3. Black Panther - Fast and fun, teaches you mobility-focused gameplay and dodge timing

Avoid starting with She-Hulk, Beta Ray Bill, or Rocket Raccoon as your primary on-field character, as they each have specific weaknesses that are frustrating until you understand the full game system.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion Character Tier List FAQ

Q: Who is the absolute best character in Marvel Cosmic Invasion?

A: Cosmic Ghost Rider is the best all-around character due to his versatility, range, and ability to handle both ground and air enemies effectively. However, Silver Surfer and Phyla-Vell are equally viable for experienced players.

Q: Can I play solo with just one character?

A: Yes, but it's not recommended. The game is designed around tag team mechanics. S-tier characters can solo most content, but you'll have an easier time with a balanced team.

Q: How do I unlock Silver Surfer?

A: Complete the Fort Galactus mission in Story Mode. Silver Surfer is the final character unlocked and one of the best in the game, so the wait is worth it.

Q: Is Spider-Man really that weak?

A: Spider-Man isn't terrible, but compared to other characters, he lacks standout abilities. His webbing is useful for crowd control and he gets a canister refill on a successful dodge, but his damage output and offensive options are underwhelming. He works better as a support character in tag teams.

Q: What's the best team for beginners?

A: Captain America + Venom. Both are available from the start, forgiving to play, and cover each other's weaknesses well. Cap handles ranged pressure with his homing shield and parry, Venom dominates close combat.

Q: Should I focus on unlocking characters first or completing story mode?

A: Focus on story mode first. You'll unlock Silver Surfer naturally, and the experience will help you understand which characters suit your playstyle before grinding for other unlocks.

Q: Do character stats increase with leveling?

A: Yes, characters gain minor stat improvements as you play with them. More importantly, every character unlocks a unique passive ability at Level 5 that can significantly change how they play -- Iron Man's parry passive is one of the strongest in the game, for example.

Q: Can I change characters mid-combo?

A: Yes! Tag switching mid-combo can extend your damage strings and is a key advanced technique for maximizing DPS. This also removes one of the biggest weaknesses of slow characters like She-Hulk and Beta Ray Bill, since their assist attacks trigger an instant teleport to the enemy.

Q: Which character is fastest?

A: Silver Surfer has the fastest movement speed in the game, followed by Black Panther and Wolverine.

Q: Are there any characters getting buffed or nerfed?

A: As of March 2026, no balance patches have been announced. The tier list reflects the current game state.

Q: What's the difference between Normal and Hard mode?

A: Hard mode increases enemy health, damage, and aggression. Some enemy patterns also change. It's recommended to master Normal mode first with S or A-tier characters -- characters with a parry mechanic become significantly more important on Hard.

Q: Can I replay missions with different characters?

A: Yes, you can replay any completed mission with any unlocked characters to practice or earn better scores.

Q: What is the parry mechanic and which characters have it?

A: Parrying lets you counter an enemy attack with a brief invulnerability window and often triggers a powerful passive bonus. Characters with parry: Silver Surfer (bonus cosmic damage on counterattacks), Captain America (deflects projectiles, boosts duo attack damage), Phoenix (fuels her flame-dash passive), Phyla-Vell (triggers a cosmic counterswipe and builds meter faster), and Iron Man (grants temporary infinite repulsor ammo). Characters with dodge instead of parry: Wolverine, Beta Ray Bill, Venom, Cosmic Ghost Rider, and others. On Hard mode, mastering the parry is the single biggest skill improvement you can make.

Q: Should I think about on-field vs. assist performance separately?

A: Yes, and this is one of the most important things the community has figured out. Some characters are strong on-field but have weak assists (Phyla-Vell), while others are clunky on-field but devastating as assists. She-Hulk's basic attack assist deals massive damage because she teleports directly to the enemy, removing her mobility problem entirely. Rocket Raccoon's grenade screen control and aerial combo assists are also among the best in the game despite his weak on-field rating. As a general rule: keep your faster character on the field and use your slower, harder-hitting character primarily as an assist.
