Monstrous hype continues to build for Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest installment in the ferociously beloved franchise, and producer Ryozo Tsujimoto came on stage at Gamescom 2024 to reveal the latest new trailer for the upcoming sequel. While a firm release date for the game has yet to be announced, there was still plenty of visual content to unpack in the new trailer, including more new monsters, more action-packed gameplay, and the new main settlement.
The trailer opens with a firsthand look at one of the game's featured monsters, a fearsome arachnid beast known as Lala Barina. She may very well give fellow spider cousin Rakna-Kadaki of Monster Hunter: Rise a run for their zennies, as our new troupe of hunters finds themselves ensnared inside the Scarlet Forest, a bright crimson web of insane proportions crafted by Lala Barina herself.
Gameplay reveals the mechanics of some of Lala Barina's attacks, including one where her abdomen turns into a surprisingly beautiful red blossom. Of course, we still wouldn't recommend getting too close. We can also see where she takes on another aggressive monster during the battle, a recurring mechanic from previous Monster Hunter games.
We also get a firsthand look at what likely will be the main settlement for all your hunting needs. As in previous games, players can craft new armor sets and weapons there, partake in special meals that boost your stats, trade goods, and more. We also get another glimpse of the bird-like mounts called Seikrets that we'll get to use this time around.
The trailer alludes to even more monsters you'll get to take on during your adventures, such as a winged "wild beast bristling with lightning" that the troupe says is the region's "apex predator". We get more gameplay of a fierce battle with this creature, which clearly likes to wield brutal lightning attacks at every opportunity. In other words, both ranged and close-quarter combat with this foe will be intense.
We also catch glimpses of what looks like Palicos building tents in the open field for player needs, probably such as resting and adjusting gear. Finally, we get a montage of other monsters prowling the deserts and canyon wastelands, where we'll likely be spending a lot of our time. Needless to say, there will be plenty of awesome new monster-themed gearsets for us to try out.
