Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will focus on the Lands Between’s untold history about Mohg and Messmer

A break between order and chaos, as commanded by Messmer the Impaler.

With a new trailer, FromSoftware has teased a big part of the story that fans can expect from Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Players will be exploring the Land of Shadow and crossing paths with Messmer the Impaler, a newly introduced character to the game's narrative.

Building on the tale of Queen Marika's child, Miquella, the new expansion will introduce new characters and a story that Elden Ring hasn't explored before.

Even though Miquella's journey seems to be missing from the trailer, his history will be explored through other characters. George R. R. Martin wrote the Lands Betweens' history alongside Hidetaka Miyazaki (president of FromSoftware) way before Shadow of the Ertree was even conceptualized.

Despite that, Miquella's story has never been told in detail before. Shadow of the Erdtree will likely do this by re-introducing familiar faces like Mohg, even though the latest trailer may not reveal much about the character.

We might dive into the history of Mohg, Lord of Blood

User ChiefLeef22 on Reddit accurately points out how one of the more important parts of the game will connect itself to Mohg, Lord of Blood. He is also the boss fight players need to beat to play Shadow of the Erdtree.

In Elden Ring, Mogh guards the body (cocoon) of Miquella, who's a descendant of Queen Marika. While the first game doesn't explore Miquella's story, it's known through weapons and character dialogue that he's cursed with a disease that doesn't let him age naturally. In the expansion, players will likely investigate Mohg's younger days or a version of him that players haven't been acquainted with before.

Shadow of the Erdtree's trailer yet again shows Mohg's kingdom (or at least what it looked like in the past). It reflects how the fight between order and chaos led to the downfall of the Lands Between, especially when we get a glimpse of Messmer the Impaler looking over a burning city.

Since FromSoftware hasn't given players the exact timeline or events that surround this realm (yet), we'll have to wait until players explore the Land of Shadow in the expansion to better understand it.

It seems that Messmer the Impaler (as shown in the first trailer as well) is going to be a commanding and terrifying boss. He's here to mimic the likes of Malenia, Blade of Miquella. In the earlier trailer, viewers were given a glimpse of his moveset and weapons. In the latest story trailer, we're shown that he commands a powerful force, almost setting everything he touches ablaze and corrupted.

Surprisingly, there's no mention of Miquella just yet. However, there's a chance that this tidbit is being held until players dive into the expansion next month. Given the nature of FromSoftware games, it's also likely that players will find out more about this as they explore the Land of Shadow.
