Neil Druckmann is returning to the video game business.
Naughty Dog's Studio Head Neil Druckmann announced today that he will be stepping away from his creative involvement in HBO's The Last of Us television adaptation. In a message to the gaming community, Druckmann explained his decision to transition his focus entirely to Naughty Dog and its upcoming projects.

The controversy mirrored the divisive reaction to the original The Last of Us Part II game, which also faced significant backlash upon its release. While there's no direct confirmation that fan backlash influenced Druckmann's decision to step away, the timing of his announcement does coincide with a particularly contentious season that generated significant negative fan reaction.
HBO renewed the series for a third season on April 9, 2025, but Druckmann has decided that with work completed on Season 2, now is the appropriate time to make this transition. His departure comes before any meaningful work begins on the third season of the critically acclaimed series.
"I've made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO," Druckmann stated in his announcement. "With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects."
The veteran game developer will now concentrate on writing and directing Naughty Dog's next major project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, while maintaining his responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative at the gaming company.
Druckmann expressed gratitude for his experience working on the HBO adaptation, calling it "a career highlight" and praising his collaboration with co-creator Craig Mazin. He thanked the cast and crew for their dedication in adapting both "The Last of Us Part I" and the ongoing adaptation of "The Last of Us Part II."
The departure marks the end of Druckmann's direct involvement in bringing his beloved video game franchise to television, though the show will continue under Mazin's leadership for its third season.
