Another Angle and Owlcat Games have finally put a date on Shadow of the Road, confirming that the turn-based tactical RPG will launch for PC on November 12, 2026.
The release date was announced alongside a new trailer during GameStar's Find Your Next Game showcase at gamescom, giving us another look at the game's peculiar mixture of historical Japan, supernatural monsters, and machinery that somebody definitely shouldn't have invented yet.
Basically, imagine 1868 Japan, add yokai and enormous steampunk contraptions, and then give everyone an initiative order.
It's More Than Samurai XCOM
Players follow a party of unlikely companions assembled around ronin Satoru and Akira, who are recruited by Tokugawa's spymaster to protect a mysterious child possessing dangerous powers.
Combat is turn-based and party-focused, with characters unlocking new abilities and combining attacks as they develop. Positioning and the environment also matter, letting players turn parts of the battlefield into traps rather than solving every disagreement through repeated application of katana. Although repeated application of katana remains available.
Things get considerably stranger when desperate situations allow characters to transform into yokai, providing another option when conventional tactics have gone catastrophically wrong. The RPG side extends beyond combat as well. Player decisions can change relationships between party members, creating or breaking friendships and family bonds while influencing how individual characters develop throughout the story.
That focus on companions, choices, and tactical combat makes Owlcat a fairly natural publisher for the project. While Shadow of the Road isn't developed internally by the studio behind Pathfinder and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, it certainly lives in familiar territory for anyone who enjoys assembling a collection of complicated people and watching their personal problems gradually become your personal problems.
Shadow of the Road launches November 12, 2026, on PC, and the demo is available now through Steam. November, apparently, needed more yokai.
