How to get a mop in Return to Monkey Island – Casual and Hard mode

How long is a piece of string?

Return to Monkey Island is both a return to the well-loved franchise and to the point-and-click humor of the original games. Our hero Guybrush Threepwood is once again on the trail of his nemesis LeChuck, and once again in search of the secret of Monkey Island. Only this time he has fallen on hard times so decides to sneak on board LeChuck’s ship as a member of the crew as a swabbie. But to do so, he needs the right tool for the job. So, how do you get a mop in Return to Monkey Island?

Go into the kitchen of the Scumm Bar, which is just past the pirate leaders’ table, and chat with the cook, then try to borrow his mop. While you’re here, go out the door at the back of the kitchen and pick up the string. Next, head to Low Street and talk to Wally the Map Maker and ask if he has a map to find the mop tree. He needs a sliver of wood from the tree to make the map. Return to the Scumm Bar to find a new smart-looking pirate customer. Another chat with the cook reveals he needs a cookbook to make the recipe he wants. While in Low Street, also buy the Forgiveness Frog and the knife from the House of Mojo.

Head to the Governor’s Mansion just outside town and talk to Carla. To borrow ‘Ingredients’ by Barbie LeFlay, you need to give Carla the Forgiveness Frog. You'll have to write an apology to Carla if you're playing on Hard mode. Take the book to the cook, which will distract him enough for you to use your knife on his mop. Take the resulting sliver of wood to Wally, who will make you a map to find the tree. Once you pass the sign and go north into the forest, you need to go: west, west, west, north, east, north, and then keep going east until you arrive at the tree. Use your knife on it to get your mop handle. Attach the handle to the string, and you have your very own mop.

To get a mop on Hard mode in Return to Monkey Island, you must find the mop handle. The instructions above are the same for Hard mode until you get to the apology part. In Hard mode, Forgiveness Frog won't get the job done, as you'll have to write the apology letter to Carla. After that, use a Casual walkthrough until the Forest part, where the path to the mop tree is more complicated on Hard mode.

How to apologize to Carla in Return to Monkey Island - Hard Mode

To apologize to Carla on Hard mode, you'll have to gather information about Carla. You'll use it in your "I'm sorry" letter. To find the everything you need go to these locations:

  • On the dock, go left from the LeChuck's ship.
  • Read the poster about Carla.
  • Go to Low street and read the plaque on Carla's statue.
  • Speak to Carla to acquire information about the book you forgot to return.

Now you have enough information to write an apology on the back of the Forgiveness Frog. Use the pen on the frog statue to begin writing the message. Here's what you need to write:

  1. Dear Carla,
  2. Sorry for losing the book I borrowed
  3. (political slogan from the poster on the dock)
  4. (location from the statue's plaque)
  5. For the last part, select whatever you want.

Go to Carla and give her the Forgiveness Frog with the message. If you wrote it according to the instructions, Carla will forgive you and let you have the cookbook. After that, continue the same way as noted above on Casual difficulty. When you get to Willy, he'll give you a map that leads to the mop tree. Here's how to find a way through the forest on Hard mode in Return to Monkey Island.

The tricky part about finding the mop tree is that each playthrough has different maps! But don't worry, there is a way in this random madness. Use three plants as guides: Carnivorous plan, purple flowers, and glowing mushrooms. Each marks one exit at crossroads, so just read the map and follow the plants.

Eventually, you'll come across the clearing with the mop tree. After you chop the tree, attach the carved tree with the string, and you'll get the mop! After this, you must get the eyepatch in Return to Monkey Island in order to get on LeChucks ship.
