Alternate Battlegrounds is a PvP Roblox experience inspired by characters from Undertale and related universes. You get to fight against other players as your favorite characters with unique abilities and passives. But understanding the core mechanics is extremely important if you want to win fights. So, to help you with that, this Alternate Battlegrounds beginner’s guide explains the controls, characters, combat systems, and strategies you need to start winning fights in Alternate Battlegrounds.

Every Control & Keybind in Alternate Battlegrounds

Alternate Battlegrounds uses a traditional PvP control, though some mechanics, such as teleporting and locking targets, are essential for combat. Do note that if you are a Console player, you need to use a keyboard and mouse setup to play properly. Here are all the keybinds you need to know:

Best Characters in Alternate Battlegrounds

Several characters are currently playable, each with unique mechanics and passives. Each character belongs to one of the Undertale fanverse, such as the following:

• Undertale (Sans, Asgore)

Sans

Modes: Bones | Blasters | Telekinesis

Sans is one of the most unique characters. Despite extremely low stats, he relies on dodge mechanics and karma damage to defeat enemies. Key traits include automatic dodging until the dodge bar is depleted, true damage attacks that ignore enemy defense, and Karma damage that drains enemy health over time.

Asgore

Modes: Fire | Trident

Asgore is a tank-style character capable of dealing sustained fire damage through burn effects. His attacks apply either short-burning or full-burning debuffs, which deal damage over time and can reduce enemy stats.

Frisk

X-Event is a versatile fighter who can switch between ranged bone attacks and close-range knife combat. His Normal abilities focus on summoning bones and blasters to pressure enemies from mid-range, while Knives mode gives him aggressive melee tools, including a command grab, teleport attacks, and guard breaks.

There is a second phase of X-Event, which significantly increases both offensive skills and survivability. This form adds the Overwrite moveset, which gives you additional abilities, including healing, powerful cutscene attacks, and a devastating ultimate move.

How to Teleport in Alternate Battlegrounds

Teleporting is one of the most important movement tools in the game. If your character has a teleport ability, you can press R to reposition near your cursor location. When you have an enemy locked onto, teleporting will instead place your character directly in front of the opponent.

Alternate Battlegrounds includes a dedicated 1v1 system for fair duels. If you want to challenge another player, type the command /challenge USERNAME or /1v1 USERNAME in the chat. When the challenge is accepted, both players are teleported to a private duel arena where the fight begins. You should avoid sending challenges while in combat because attempting to challenge someone while combat-tagged will result in death.

• Clashing: This occurs when two players hit each other with melee attacks at the exact same moment. Both will be pushed back slightly, and no stun is applied. Only melee attacks can cause clashing.
• Warning Moves: These are attacks marked with an exclamation icon. These indicate that a powerful attack is about to occur. Some warning attacks target enemies directly, while others are self-based abilities. Targeted warning moves can be blocked or countered.

Know Your Character and Your Opponent

One of the most important skills in Alternate Battlegrounds is understanding both your character’s moveset and your opponent’s abilities. Every character has specific strengths, weaknesses, and ideal combat ranges. Knowing these differences allows you to build a strategy before the fight even begins.

For example, Frisk excels at close-range combat because they have multiple guard break abilities, such as Determination 1 and Determination 3. These moves will counter you if you rely heavily on blocking. However, Frisk has weaker long-range pressure compared to characters like Sans, whose ranged attacks can poke safely from a distance.

Learn Your Opponent’s Habits

In many PvP matches, you might have repeating move patterns without realizing it. Learning to recognize these habits can give you a huge advantage during fights. Most combat skills revolve around three moves, and here's how you can counter them:

Pay attention to which of these options your opponent uses most frequently. If someone constantly attempts teleport guard breaks, you can counter them with a quick melee attack. If they always swing after teleporting, blocking may allow you to land a perfect block and punish them.

Block Against Teleport Engages

Teleport engages are extremely common in Alternate Battlegrounds. Many players teleport directly into melee range to start combos or attempt guard breaks. One of the best defensive responses is to block immediately after the opponent teleports. This gives you a chance to perfect block an incoming attack and punish them with your own combo.

If the opponent tries to guard break instead of attacking normally, you can quickly switch to LMB to interrupt their move. In the worst-case scenario, both attacks would clash, which still prevents the opponent from getting a free combo.
