Don't let this rune your day...

There are plenty of other secrets hidden around the world in Sea of Stars, and this Flooded Graveyard puzzle may just be one of the more interesting and mind-boggling of the bunch. If you're utterly confused about what to do with those runes like I was at first, then don't worry; we have all the steps you need to take to complete this puzzle. Here's how to get and unlock the Flooded Graveyard chest.

How to solve the Flooded Graveyard rune puzzle in Sea of Stars

You probably came across this puzzle just to the left of the Necromancer's Lair as you explored the Flooded Graveyard. There is a chest locked behind bars, but there aren't any other puzzle pieces you can interact with to open them. All you have are three colored runes above them. Unfortunately, if this is your first time through the Flooded Graveyard, you probably don't have the abilities you need to solve this, and you'll need to progress further in the main story so you can earn your new form of travel.

WARNING: This could potentially hold spoilers for the main story. Keep reading at your own discretion.

Once you obtain the ability to fly, you'll be able to navigate to a new hidden area where you can solve the puzzle and unlock the chest. This island is located northeast of Wraith Island. It is technically included as part of the main island, so you won't see any name pop up as you hover over it. Instead, use flight to drop down onto it and walk toward the cave entrance, where you'll see the name "Romaya's Secret Passage"

Inside, you'll see some similar-looking runes and four spinners. These are connected to the ones back in the other area, so the goal is to match them exactly. Taking a look back at the other runes, you'll need to change the new ones to the following:

  • Red: Three scratches
  • Green: Upside down V with a flattened plus sign
  • Purple: A lightning bolt with two dots

To change the ones in the secret entrance to match the ones back in the chest room, you'll need to use your wind gust ability with X or Square on your controller to turn the spinners.

First, head to the spinner at the very top middle and spin it until you get the colors in the right order:

  • Left: Red
  • Middle: Green
  • Right: Purple

Then, you can turn the spinner beside each rune to cycle through the way they look. All these will look very similar, so try to match them to the pictures above and below (by flipping through each one) the best that you can:

Once you have all of them matching correctly, it will automatically open up a new entrance leading back to the chest room. You'll also find the chest is now unlocked. Inside, you'll find Romaya's Journal. This item can be used to help Duke Aventry, and you can give it to him where he is waiting right outside the tomb.
