How to change difficulty in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown

Can AI difficulty be changed?

In Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, you can participate in various races across the island of Hong Kong to level up your character and earn money. The AI cars can be very competitive and hard to beat, so you might wonder how the difficulty setting can be changed. Let's find out.

Can you change the difficulty in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown?

No, you cannot change the difficulty level to reduce the capabilities of AI opponents in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. This isn't an option in most arcade racing games as the AI is tuned well; however, in Solar Crown it seems off. Several players have expressed concerns about the high difficulty in races on community forums like Reddit.

How to beat AI cars in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown

Although you can't change the difficulty in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, there are some gameplay mechanics and techniques you can use to your advantage. These can help you win races given you're not competing in the tournament with an underperforming car.

Driving Assists

The Driving Assists option is the closest you can get to the difficulty setting in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown. Before starting any race, you can select your car and adjust the Driving Assists, which includes the race line, gear shift method, ABS, and TCS. If you consider yourself skilled at racing games, pick the Expert or Experienced preset. You can even change each setting to your liking and create a custom preset (see image above).

If you're having trouble competing, use the Novice preset for maximum Driving Assists, but you'll not get any bonus money reward. While racing when it's raining, I prefer to have TCS maxed out as traction control helps me handle the car effortlessly on wet roads.

Car Setup

Another setting you can tweak before getting into a race is Car Setup. As you can see above, you can select your preferred Driving Mode and Tires if you have them unlocked (the minimum Reputation level required is 15). For instance, I use the Dynamic Driving Mode if it's a race against time with tight corners. Moreover, the Off-Road Tires are a must in off-road cross-country races if you want to beat the AI cars.

You first need to purchase these tires from a Workshop. Visit the nearest establishment and walk up to your car to customize it. You'll find the various tire options under the Performance tab. Purchase Off-Road tires like I've shown in the above picture and they'll be permanently added to this car. You can then choose your preferred option before each race.

4WD Cars

Any starter car you pick will be an RWD (Rear Wheel Drive). These are okay for early races but as you level up and compete in higher difficulty races, it's imperative to get a 4WD (Four Wheel Drive). I purchased the Audi TT RS Coupe (2017) from a German Dealership for a reasonable price (see image above) and it's a great car with good handling capabilities. Also, don't forget to upgrade your car over time at Workshops to improve its stats.
