The heart of the tactical RPG Rogue Trader is its turn-based combat, and your first serious challenge comes during the prologue when you face a Chaos Spawn. It’s a tough fight, so read on to find out how to defeat the Warp Creature quest.
How to beat the Chaos Spawn in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader
To defeat the Chaos Spawn and complete the Defeat the Warp Creature quest in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, you’ll need to defeat all seven enemies. The good news is there are no challenging enemies, as the six Heretic Cutthroats you face are relatively weak. However, that Chaos Spawn is a different matter…
Note that by reading on, you’ll see some mild spoilers. Also, note I can only talk about the NPC team around your central character, as those are set. Your role in the battle is entirely up to you, so just work to your strengths.
Best set up for the Warp Creature fight in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader
Remember to equip each character with your best second weapon before the battle. You do this in your inventory by dragging one onto the II slot in the bottom left of the character screen. You’ll want everyone to have a melee go-to, just in case they need to go hand-in-hand.
I put Abelard up front and center, with Argenta and Idira in cover on opposite sides. What you do with your main character will depend on your skill set, but whatever it is, try to keep everyone well separated (see below).
Pay close attention to the turn order during set up. You want to ensure the Warp Creature doesn’t get close to your ranged DPS units, so your tank needs to be in the way. That said, if he can benefit from some group buffs and still move and charge before the Chaos Spawn, you can keep him further back until he can act. The Heretic Cutthroats will snipe at you, so don’t worry about them during setup.
Go for the Heretic Cutthroats first before focusing on the Chaos Spawn
While the Heretic Cutthroats have weak health, there are a lot of them, and they still have a weapon each! If you don’t take them out, you may end up suffering death by a thousand cuts as they snipe at you.
Argenta is your go-to character of choice here. Burst Fire is perfect for dealing with the four who start near the Chaos Spawn, especially as stray shots may wear it down a little, too. Once they’re down, she has the movement and range to deal with the two who will drop back and snipe at you.
It’s tempting to dart past the Warp Creature to deal to get the other side of it and closer to those snipers. However, if you step too close to it, those attacks of opportunity are deadly, and they’ll also stop your progress next to the Chaos Spawn. Not advisable…
Best strategy to kill the Chaos Spawn Warp Creature in Rogue Trader
Your personal involvement here will vary depending on your abilities, but clever use of Idira and Abelard should set up the win. If you want to act as a second tank, still try to keep your distance from Abelard.
In general, try to keep your units well away from each other. Chaos Spawn’s Toxic Spurt is an area-of-effect ranged attack that creates a two-round Toxic Zone in a 3x3 grid, which can deal damage over time to anyone in it. If you find yourself hit with this attack, it is likely worth moving out of the Toxic Zone, even if it means breaking cover.
How to use Abelard against the Chaos Spawn
Abelard is perfectly built for a tank role and is vital here. Get him into melee with the Chaos Spawn as quickly as possible (preferably via Charge), and then do everything you can to keep him alive. Remember your Med Kits and use skills such as Brace for Impact and Endure before offensive ones. While Abelard is holding it at bay, you’re in good shape.
How to use Idira against the Chaos Spawn
Get Idira behind a good cover and focus her on using Forewarning on Abelard (or you, if you’re tanking); you can while using Analyse Enemies and Expose Weakness on the Chaos Spawn. Idira's main role is to buff her allies as well as debuff enemies, so be sure to use the full extent of her powers. However, be aware of the perils of the warp, and don't spam the Psychic Shriek too often.
What do to if the Chaos Spawn downs Abelard
Abelard will likely succumb to the Chaos Spawn before your ranged attacks can take it out. Be prepared to switch to another unit to melee to take his place and keep it focused away from whoever is dealing the most DPS with it. Remember, only one of you needs to be standing at the end of the battle.
What do you get for defeating the Warp Creature in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader?
The Chaos Spawn will drop a couple of nice items once defeated, but you have to loot them immediately, as they won’t be there if you move off and start the dialogue that completes this part of the prologue.
