Should you destroy the Thunderfang in Rogue Trader?

Save or Spare?

Early in your Rogue Trader adventures, you may come across a mysterious ship in space called the Thunderfang. You're given the option to destroy it if you want to, but should you do so?

Should you spare the Thunderfang in Thunderfang in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader?

When you come across the Thunderfang, opening dialogue with the ship leads to a flurry of mysterious text that doesn't have much context. What you do learn, should you decide to keep questioning the crew, is that they belong to some mysterious faction and that something is wrong. Eventually, you can decide to destroy the Thunderfang by opening fire on it, but doing so is not recommended.

The reason is that the Thunderfang belongs to the equally mysterious Fellowship of the Void trade faction, which offers some powerful gear choices if you put in the work to build up both for reputation with the faction and your Profit Factor rating. By destroying the ship, you permanently forfeit the ability to get the unique gear the Thunderfang has to offer. This choice is meant to teach you early on, in Rogue Trader, to not jump to conclusions before getting all the facts and details. Otherwise, you'll miss out on some interesting loot.

What kind of gear can you get from Thunderfang?

By opening trade with the Thunderfang instead of destroying it, you can obtain some notable gear once you build up enough Profit Factor.

  • Flamer - This is the earliest you can obtain a Flamer for any pyromaniac builds you might be cooking up. Best of all, you don't need to build any Profit Factor for it, and can purchase it as soon as you reach the Thunderfang. I picked it up as soon as I saw it and never looked back.
  • Stalker Gloves - Grants the user a 5% increased Critical Chance against targets the user has already hit. Nice early-game gear for a DPS character, but requires a Profit Factor of 15.
  • Medikits - While not necessarily scarce, they can be if you're playing on a harder difficulty. As such, you can purchase up to nine of these from the Thunderfang as soon as you reach it.

  • Reaper Cape - For melee characters, this cape makes it easier to land cleaving attacks by reducing the Dodge Reduction of the user's targets. Requires 11 Profit Factor.
  • Pneumo Boots - Grants a -1 AP cost for using the Charge ability. AP Reduction in Rogue Trader is always worth going for as it just means you can perform more actions per turn. Charge being so integral to Warrior gameplay means these are of high value. Requires 11 Profit Factor.
  • Medal of Alacrity - When the user (that is an Officer) uses the Bring It Down! ability to give an ally another turn, that ally also gains one additional AP. Again, AP gain or reductions at no additional cost are always worth investing in. Costs 20 Profit Factor.
