Beginner's Guide in Hytale

Below you'll find a list of various topics guiding you through the first few hours of Hytale. Feel free to select the topic you need from the Table of Contents above. They include tips from basic crafting to advanced gear and progression as well as specifics like how to tame horses or use Essence of Life and Void.

Pickaxe, Hatchet and Weapon (Rubble, Sticks and Plant Fiber)

To craft your first Hatchet for cutting trees, Pickaxe for mining and Weapon, simply go outside of the spawn building and pick up Sticks and Rubble off the ground. Hit the grass as well to get some Plant Fiber. Then press Tab and click on the tool you want to craft. You’ll see the necessary ingredients and once you have everything, click on craft. Now it’s just a matter of putting it on your 1-9 toolbar and selecting it to cut down trees and mine rocks.

The cool thing about Hytale trees is that all tree blocks drop once you cut down the bottom block.

Your First Base and Workbench

To gain access to every other recipe in Hytale use that first Pickaxe you crafted to get stone in caves or by digging down. Then use that first Hatchet to get some wood blocks by cutting down the bottom block of trees. Then you can press Tab, click on the Workbench and craft it. I recommend placing it inside of your spawn building for a first makeshift base and protection from hostile mobs that spawn at night. You can also patch up the roof of the spawn building with either dirt or wood blocks for protection. Don’t worry as you have plenty of time, Hytale Days are much longer than in Minecraft.

How to Craft Torches

You get Plant Fiber from the grass blocks and Sticks by picking them up from the ground or cutting down trees. You’ll also get Tree Sap but cutting down your first tree. Then just craft Torches by hitting Tab and you’ll get 4x at a time like in Minecraft.

How to Get Copper

Copper is found in generated caves so using the Workbench craft torches, your first weapon (Crude Sword) and a pickaxe. Once you have all of these, go around your spawn building and look for a naturally generated cave. I recommend bringing around 20 Torches at least. Then just go down the cave placing Torches every so often until you find the Copper Ore block which you can mine with the opening pickaxe. Once you’ve mined two or three veins of it, you can keep exploring but I recommend going back to the surface for better gear.

Never dig straight down lest you might fall into a pre-generated cave and die from fall damage, lava or a hostile mob swarm. Always mine using methods like digging down with something like a stairway pattern.

How to Craft Better Tools, Weapons and Armor

Once you have some Copper Ore blocks, you can craft the Furnace in the Crafting tab of the Workbench and melt them with some wood blocks. Then I recommend going for the following in this order:

  1. Shield: Craft the Armorer’s Workbench in the Crafting Section of the Workshop, place it down, then open it. Look for the last tab with Shields where you can craft your first Copper shield. They are amazing defensive tools for fighting enemies, mini bosses and bosses. You can equip the shield by pressing Tab and clicking the Z slot below your character, then you can access it at any time by pressing Z (RMB to wield it) and it’ll stay equipped alongside any one-handed weapon, block or tool.
  2. Copper Weapon: Craft the Blacksmith’s Anvil in the Crafting Section of the Workshop, place it down, then open it. I recommend crafting a one-handed Copper sword since it can be used alongside the shield for a great balance of defense and offense. Using weapons charges their skill bar which you can use with Q once full to do a lot of damage.
  3. Copper Tools: These can be crafted at the Workbench in the second Tools tab with no special station required.
  4. Get a Bow: Bows are really easy to craft unlike in Minecraft where you need Spiders. Just get some Sticks and Plant Fiber off the ground and craft a Bow and Arrows at the Workbench for some excellent ranged utility. You can shoot and retreat thus kiting back plenty of mobs and bosses.
  5. Get Armor: Armor is the last thing you should be using Copper on and any advanced material for that matter since higher-tier Weapons and Tools are usually more valuable. Still, Armor drastically boost your survivability so go for Gauntlets/Helm as low-cost options or Chest/Legs as higher-cost options at the Armorer’s Workbench. A good rule of thumb is to have armor from the previous tier and use materials in your current tier for weapons and tools first. For example, once you're crafting stuff with Iron, have armor from the Copper tier, etc.

Combat Tips

Here’s everything you need to know about basic combat:

  • One Handed VS Two Handed: For beginners I recommend crafting a one handed sword and Shield since it’s an easier combat style starting out. You can charge attack and basic attack and then block with the shield to avoid damage while moving back to recharge stamina and HP if necessary. It’s the easiest way to beat the Golem boss at the temple (See below). That said, Two Handed weapons like the Axe and Mace deal more damage, have better AOE attacks for multiple enemies and can still block. They’re just harder to play for beginners since they’re slower, require timing with charge attacks and don’t block the full damage.
  • Shield Bash: Besides the Shield being the best for blocking early, you can also M1 while holding a shield up to shield bash which is useful for keeping multiple enemies away from you if you want to retreat.
  • Charge Attack: Holding down LMB charges up a higher damage attack that usually moves you forward for some mobility. It’s a great way to range hostile mob attacks and then close the distance for damage then back away.
  • Skills: On the bottom right you’ll see your weapon skill charging up and you can release it with Q once the bar is full for massive damage.
  • Healing: If you get low on HP, sprint back behind an obstacle or to high ground to eat a Food item (Campfire/Cooked are best) and heal back up. Remember to play around blocks and sprint from blows while you heal up.
  • Get Armor: Once you have weapons, shields and food, consider investing into crafting armor at the Armorer's Workbench. Even if you're at the Iron tier something like a few Copper Armor pieces go a long way to boost HP and defenses.
  • Stealth: You can crouch with Ctrl by default to sneak behind a creature and charge attack it for a strong opening to a fight.

How to Heal

You heal by eating food in this game and while you can eat basic food pickups like Carrots it’s much better to cook them. Press tab and make a Campfire where you can cook and make healing items like Cooked Vegetables (From Carrots on the ground or Mushrooms in the caves). You can also cook meat from Cows, Bears, Fish and other animals. These will heal for drastically more than their raw versions. Also, as fuel, you can use Sticks, Wood blocks or Charcoal which are leftovers from melting Ore with Wood.

How to Tame Horses and Travel Faster

Unlike in Minecraft, you can easily ride horses in Hytale just by finding them and pressing F near an adult horse. Sprinting with them makes traversal much faster and I recommend it for exploring and reaching the Forgotten Temple Gateway fast. Horses usually stick around the area you left them so you can keep one outside of your base and it’ll usually always be there waiting for you the next day.

Forgotten Temple Gateway – Memories, Life Essence Trading and Progression

  • hytale life essence trader and memory altar location

Once you have some Copper Weapons, a Shield, some cooked food and maybe some armor I recommend going to the Forgotten Temple Gateway. This is how you unlock a few new mechanics like trading Life Essence and getting Memories. Simply open your map with M and look for the spiral Forgotten Temple Portal icon and go there. Once you reach it you’ll see a shining statue so just go behind it and into the temple while descending down the stairs to the level below. This is where you’ll fight your first mini boss which is the golem creature:

  • The easiest way to beat it is either spamming it with arrows from a bow and backing away or using a one handed Copper sword and Shield.
  • For the melee strategy, do a couple of M1 swings or a single charged attack and then block with your shield or move away depending on how close the golem is. Do a Q special attack once it’s charged.
  • You can repeat this pattern to kill it but the most important part to know is that when you see the golem charging up his spin attack, don’t block it and instead sprint away keeping your distance as it finishes.
  • Once you beat the golem, loot the chests in the room and enter the portal.

The portal will take you to the Hytale HUB world full of friendly NPCs. Go to the center to find and altar and some trading NPCs. The altar will allow you, from now on, to record creature memories by looking at them. Then you can return to this HUB and the altar to cash them in for rewards which you can see below. As for Life Essence, you can trade it with the friendly NPCs in front of the altar.

How to Get and Use Essence of Life, Essence of Void and Voidheart

  • hytale forgotten temple gateway guide
  • hytale life essence trader and memory altar location
  • hytale essence of life trading

You get Essence of Life from the carrots, plants, trees and animals around Hytale mostly during the day and you get Essence of Void and Voidheart from the demonic creatures that spawn at night. Here’s how to use these three resources:

  • Essence of Life: Check out how to reach the Forgotten Temple Gateway HUB section above since you can use the Essence of Life to trade with the friendly NPC in the Gateway HUB world who is located near the altar at the center of the HUB world.
  • Essence of Void: You can use this resources to craft the Arcanist’s Workbench at the Workbench as well as other recipes like the highest-tier armor at the Armorer’s Workbench.
  • Voidheart: You can use the Voidheart to craft the highest-tier weapon at the Blacksmith’s Anvil.

How to Get Light, Medium and Heavy Leather – Advanced Weapons and Armor

These are crucial items for crafting advanced weapons and armor and more and you can get it from various animals in the form of Hide. Then you can turn Hide into Leather at the Tanning Rack crafted at a Workbench. Place it down and put all your Hide items which makes the appropriate Leather item from it:

  • Light Hide: You can get it from rabbits and other smaller animals.
  • Medium Hide: You can get it from from Cows, Horses and other animals larger than rabbits.
  • Heavy Hide: You can get it from Bears and other large animals.

Light Hide makes Light Leather, Medium Hide makes Medium Leather and Heavy Hide makes Heavy Leather at the Tanning Rack.

When to Upgrade Crafting Station Tiers

I recommend only upgrading station tiers once you find the higher-tier material you want to craft gear with. For example, only upgrade the Armorer’s Workbench or Blacksmith’s Anvil to Tier 2 once you find Iron, to Tier 3 once you find Thorium, etc. Only upgrade the Workbench to Tier 2 once you farm at least 20 Essence of the Void from hostile night/Void mobs for the Arcanist’s Workbench (Or Venom Sacks from Spiders for the Alchemist’s Workbench). It’s not worth it to upgrade them before since you can’t use them without that higher-tier material anyway.

How to Check Death Location

The place where you died will show up on your map (Press M) as a gravestone. The day of your death will also be marked. This is the best way to check where your items dropped on death so you can go and pick them up. If you died underground, you can retrace your cave exploration path but if you don't remember it, just go to the death location marked on your map and dig down (Preferably in a spiral or the stair method so you don't accidentally fall down a chasm and take fall damage or worse).

How to Repair Equipment

You can craft a Repair Kit at the second tab of the Workbench. You'll need Light Leather from Leather Hide from rabbits and other smaller animals. Once you have a Repair Kit you can repair the durability of any item that has durability.

How to Find Enemy Camps

  • hytale enemy camps
  • hytale troll camp

Press M on your map and look for locations on the map such as the ones marked above. These are mob camps where you can find enemies and loot. Defeat the enemies in the camp and you can open their chests and break their crates, boxes and pots for loot. It's a great way to earn extra resources.
