Call of Duty: Modern Warfare features Watches, a brand new piece of equipment for Infinity Ward’s reboot of the franchise. It doesn’t feature any actual gameplay functionality (yet) and is purely cosmetic, but it’s a nifty feature nonetheless. At the very least, it should help you keep track of time during lengthy playing sessions.
In this guide, we’re going to detail how to earn watches in-game and detail the primary function of them. Basically, we’re going to dispel all of the confusion Infinity Ward has caused with this obtuse new feature.
How to Get a Watch in Modern Warfare
Watches in Modern Warfare have been a source of confusion since launch, as it’s not immediately clear how to earn them or what they do. When you head to your Loadout, you’ll see a greyed out option for ‘Watches’ and hovering over it doesn’t really give you much more information.
Well, it turns out that that’s because they’re not really available yet. Well, not in-game at least. There’s a DLC “Endowment Defender Pack” that you can purchase to unlock a variety of cosmetics, including a watch, and a promotional offer in the US that will provide you with a Watch in exchange for buying two Totino’s products. You’ll get a code in each of them that you can redeem in-game for a free Watch.
Going forward, Watches will likely make a more common appearance as a reward, perhaps for completing challenges or participating in seasons. It’s also likely that there’ll be loads of promotional offers for Watches too. We’ll have to wait and see.
What do Watches do in Modern Warfare?
Well, it seems that the actual functionality of the Watch depends on the Watch itself, though the general purpose seems to be to simply provide a new cosmetic option for your character. Any equipped watch will be visible on your wrist at all times.
Obviously, certain Watches can be used as a rudimentary time-piece – and they’ll actually tell you the real time where you are now, based on your PC or console’s set time. However, we do know of several different upcoming uses for Watches:
- A Tamagotchi-style game called “Tamagunchi”. Your pet feeds off kills. Gnarly.
- A kill tracker (this should help you with challenges and keeping track of killstreaks)
- A step counter
There will undoubtedly be way more down the line, but that’s all we know for now.
How do I Check My Watch in Modern Warfare?
If you’re lucky enough to own a Watch in Modern Warfare right now, there is a way to actually check it mid-game. There’s an emote available from the get-go that lets you – you guessed it – check your watch. It’s handily-called ‘Check Watch’ and you can equip it from the ‘Sprays & Gestures’ screen.
