What is Lyra? Explained

At the State of Unreal conference, Epic Games, the current owners of the Unreal Engine, unveiled a new project: Lyra. Running on Unreal Engine 5, Lyra is one of the engine’s latest developments. But what exactly is Lyra?

In short, Lyra is a brand new shooter game built in Unreal Engine 5 that shows off the engine’s capabilities. Lyra has been designed to launch alongside Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) and is essentially a foundation that developers can experiment with and use to learn just what UE5 is capable of.

Lyra is fully playable, but can also be taken apart by Unreal Engine 5 creators looking for a base for their next game. And it truly showcases the potential of UE5 by showing off cross-platform multiplayer using the Epic Online Services (EOS).

Lyra’s glossy white walls and red guy vs. blue guy gunplay are reminiscent of classic shooters from previous generations. But its features are distinctly modern. It’s alarmingly smooth reflections and lighting, top-not graphics (ofcourse), and overall the perfect blank canvas for developers.

What can you do with Lyra?

Lyra is a basis from which you can build your own Unreal Engine 5 game. As a demo of the engine, Lyra can be tooled around with the Unreal Engine 5 editor to figure out just what the engine is capable of.

The Lyra demo is downloadable right now on the official website. Lyra is just one of the announcements made by Epic Games in their official launch of Unreal Engine 5 on State of Unreal. The company also unveiled a host of upcoming games that will be using the engine beyond just the tech-demo-ish Lyra.
