At the State of Unreal event, Epic Games unveiled the future of their Unreal 5 Engine. Previously previewed in the Matrix: Awakens open-world game and tech demo, Unreal 5 Engine was released to the world today. And as part of that comes a new demo and starter game called Lyra.
Lyra is a foundational multiplayer shooter, pitting a simple blue and red pair of avatars against each other in an arena reminiscent of a classic Unreal game. But beyond just a tech demo, Lyra is intended to be the starting point for developers.

On the game’s website, Lyra is described as “an excellent starting point for game developers to create new projects, as well as a hands-on learning resource.” In addition, Lyra debuts several of Unreal 5 Engine’s new features, such as the new base mannequins and scalability from mobile games to high-end PC gaming.
Lyra features two game modes, Team Deathmatch (Expanse) and a capture-the-point game (Convolution). It’s also linked to Epic Online Services, so you can play it cross-platform.
Overall, as a foundation for projects, Lyra looks supremely impressive and is sure to spawn some incredible creations in the future. You can download Lyra on the official website.
