What does Hyper Training do for you in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

To be the very best, you'll need to Hyper Train!

If you’ve spoken to a man with a brown jacket in Montenevera, you’ll find out that he’s looking for Bottle Caps in exchange for something called Hyper Training. But what is Hyper Training and why is it a crucial part of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet’s competitive scene? Let’s find out.

What is Hyper Training?

Hyper Training is a method that lets you raise a Pokémon's stats’ individual value (IV) to 31. IVs are hidden values each stat has that dictate the maximum value they can grow into with each level up. Thirty-one is considered the “perfect” IV, meaning that a level 50 Quaquaval with an Attack IV of 31 will have a higher Attack stat compared to a level 50 Quaquaval with an IV of 15.

Every Pokémon’s stat is assigned a fixed IV upon hatching or capture. The only way to raise an IV after this is through Hyper Training.

Since IVs are hidden values, they’re not something you can check by opening the menu. You first need to finish the game, watch the credits roll, and speak to a Nurse Joy after you’ve saved Paldea. She will grant you access to the Judge function, which lets you check IVs in your Pokémon Box.

The Judge function won’t provide you with a number, only a rough estimate between 0 and 31. A stat with an IV of 31 will say “Best.” A Hyper Trained stat will say “Hyper Trained,” which is an equivalent of a Best IV. The only difference is that you can’t pass down Hyper Trained stats to offspring.
