A new Minecraft Combat Snapshot (V6) has been released!

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Jeb, who is the Chief Creative Office of Mojang, has been working on a big update to Minecraft's combat system. He has been tinkering with it via Combat Snapshots that have come out over the last year or so. These are seeking to improve the overall feel of the system in both Java and Bedrock modes. Believe it or not, there's quite a bit of people who play different PvP modes in Minecraft, so combat has been a hot topic over the years.

It has been about 6 months or so since the last combat update, so this one has come a bit out of nowhere. However, it's a welcome look at what might be in-store for combat in the future.

This is version 6 of the attempted update, and brings a bunch of new things to test out. Here's some of the highlights of the changes:

  • Aim assist has been redesigned with a different approach.
  • "Coyote Time" has been removed, and Swords will always have sweeping attacks again.
  • Shields now only protect 5 damage from melee attacks and recover faster after an attack
  • Player momentum has been added to thrown projectiles
  • Bow accuracy slowly decreases the longer you pull the arrow back

There's a bunch more to read, so check out the entire post by Jeb on the Minecraft Subreddit!

This is currently only available for the Java version, but you don't add it to your game like a typical snapshot. You will need to download this zip file, and then unpack it into the versions folder of your local Minecraft application data folder. You will then need to create a new launch configuration in the launcher and select the "pending 1.16_combat-0" version. Once you open up the game, it will download some of the remaining files need to play. You will need to start a new world because it is not compatible with previous versions of the game.
