Crown Tundra: Should you choose Glastrier or Spectrier?

It's hard to choose between two legendary types of Pokémon, we've created this guide to help you choose!
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Throughout the Pokémon games, players have always had to make difficult choices. One of the hardest decisions of all is what Pokémon to choose at the start of the game; for some people, this is easy, but some people actually roll a D20, and whatever rolls is canon. Yet, before all that, you have to choose the game version you want to buy, as each game will have specific Pokémon that are not available in the other title, especially when it comes to the Legendaries. In the latest expansion, the Crown Tundra, nothing has changed; you've still got difficult decisions to make, even more so if you're playing it blind.

Where should I plant the Carrot Seeds?

You have to choose whether you should pick Glastrier or Spectrier in the Crown Tundra DLC. This choice appears when you've traded for the Carrot Seeds, and now you have two places where you can plant them. Each place changes the type of Calyrex's steed, thus, in turn adding a different type to this legendary Pokémon. The first question is which of the two types would you prefer Calyrex to become, as whichever carrot you plant will determine the second type:

  • Snowslide Slope: These will turn into Iceroot Carrots - Calyrex's steed will become Glastrier. Making Calyrex Psychic Ice-type.
  • Old Cemetery: These will turn into Shaderoot Carrots. - Calyrex's steed will become Spectier. Making Calyrex Psychic Ghost-type.

Basically, later on in the story, Calyrex will again ride its lost chosen steed, thus combining the two different Pokémon into one, with combined types. You can only have one or the other, unless you have a copy of the other version of the game.

What are the differences between the two Pokémon apart from the type? Well, the stats change depending on what steed Calyrex is riding:

Calyrex with Glastrier

Psychic Ice-type

  • Health: 100
  • Attack: 165
  • Defense: 150
  • Special Attack: 85
  • Special Defense: 130
  • Speed: 50

Calyrex with Spectrier

Psychic Ghost-type

  • Health: 100
  • Attack: 85
  • Defense: 80
  • Special Attack: 165
  • Special Defense: 100
  • Speed: 150

You can tell straight away that the two types are more or less direct opposites of each other.

Glastrier is focused more on the physical attack, defense, and special defense stats. Meaning physical attacks are perfect for this Pokémon to use. Plus, they can take a beating and survive, whether from physical or special attacks. Though because of Glastrier's speed, it'll be infrequent for him to go first in a fight.

Spectrier, on the other hand, is more special attack and speed focused, so you want him to deal heavy damage with special attack and then hopefully dodge any attacks that are thrown their way. We would class Spectrier as a glass cannon, though their special defense is its third-highest stat.

To choose between the two, look at your overall party synergy - it's entirely based on how you play.

  • If you lack a legendary tank, who can take a hit and deal great physical damage, choose Glastrier.
  • If you lack a legendary with speed and special attack, who's more of a glass cannon, choose Sprectrier.
