How to beat the 5 Star Gimmighoul Tera Raid in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

Thank god it's Gimmighoul and not Goldhengo.

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet players should get ready for a pretty tough 7 Star Raid Battle. The new raid boss will be Gimmighoul, which by itself isn't too threatening, but it will have various Tera types. Players won't be able to figure out the best type matchup beforehand, so that means trainers are just going to have to prepare for anything.

When will the 5 Star Gimmighoul Raid battle be active?

Players can start fighting 7 Star Gimmighoul right now. The Pokémon has been a Raid Boss as of today (June 21st) and will remain a Raid Boss until July 2nd. That gives trainers just under two weeks to try and beat Gimmighoul.

What are the best counters to 5 Star Gimmighoul in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

While the Gimmighoul Raid Bosses can be any Tera Type, its moveset should be fairly consistent. The only moves that Gimmighoul learns naturally are Astonish and Tackle (neither of which are very powerful). This gives Normal-types a strong matchup here since they will be immune to Astonish (and a potential Ghost Tera Blast). Normal-types are also only weak to Fighting, a type which Gimmighoul will have a 1 in 18 chance of Terastallizing into.

Another weakness of Gimmighoul that trainers can exploit is its base 25 Defense. That means, even in a five-star raid, Gimmighoul is going to be taking plenty of damage from physical attacks. Therefore, arguably the best counter to bring against Gimmighoul is Staraptor.

Staraptor has the Normal typing it needs to dodge Gimmighoul's Ghost-type moves. It also gets a very powerful attack in Brave Bird, which hits most types for at least neutral damage. Players can attach a Choice Band to Staraptor and simply spam Brave Bird until Gimmighoul faints.

Staraptor will have to worry about potential Tera Electric, Tera Rock, or Tera Steel Gimmighoul with this strategy. Fortunately, Staraptor also learns Close Combat, which counters two of those Tera types (Rock and Steel).

Outside of Staraptor, I would suggest using strong physical Pokémon that have good coverage, so that they can at least beat most Tera Types. I personally love using Haxorus for these situations. This Dragon-type has loads of powerful moves with different typings, including Outrage, Close Combat, Earthquake, First Impression, Stone Edge, Giga Impact, and Iron Head.

Other strong Pokemon with lots of coverage moves are as follows:

  • Garchomp
  • Ceruledge
  • Iron Valiant
  • Roaring Moon
  • Chien Pao
