Much like classic titles like Harvest Moon and Star Ocean, choosing between two protagonists was a common sight in many RPGs back then. So, when faced with a choice between Zale or Valere—no matter how many times Sea of Stars tells you it doesn’t matter—it’s difficult not to think about your decision. What are the consequences of choosing one character over the other?
Zale or Valere - Who should I choose as my leader in Sea of Stars?
First off, the Sea of Stars devs didn’t lie. It really doesn’t matter who you pick in the beginning, as Zale and Valere fight and travel together. This is no Star Ocean: The Divine Force moment where protagonists go on separate journeys. They’re truly just asking who you want to lead your party in the first couple of minutes (not even hours!) of the game.
If you really care about the details of the character leading your party, here’s a quick summary:
- Zale: Zale is a Blade Dancer. He’s fast and uses a sword. As a sun warrior, his magic is more traditional in nature, involving fireballs and healing.
- Valere: Valere is a Battle Monk. She wields a staff and does heavy physical damage. As a moon warrior, Valere is the type to imbue her weapons with magic to unleash more powerful strikes.

You’ll journey with your chosen character for a very short tutorial and meet up with the other right after.
Also, Sea of Stars will sometimes acknowledge your party's leader very subtlely, like calling on them for tasks, making them step forward first for certain events, and more. It's was honestly cool of the devs to add those details.
How to change your leader in Sea of Stars
When you finally have access to Camp one flashback later, you can eventually choose which character leads your party. Open your menu and move your arrow to Order. Use the option to swap your party member around.
