What is Strange Chunk of Amber for in BG3?

Is it a dragon egg?

During the quest The Blood of Lathander in Baldur's Gate 3, players can find a mysterious object: a Strange Chunk of Amber. Since it is a unique item and has the word "strange" in its name, it naturally sparks suspicion and interest. But what is Strange Chunk of Amber and what is it for?

Strange Chunk of Amber can be found inside the Creche Y'llek of Rosymorn Monastery. In the Inquisitor's room, there is a display case right in front of two statues (X:1338 Y:-661); if you loot it, you will find the Strange Chunk of Amber.

How to use Strange Chunk of Amber in BG3

I thought the item was going to come into play eventually, perhaps as part of a crafting recipe, but the truth is the chunk of amber is only a decoy and has no utility. It was placed in the display case as a red herring, to mislead any thieves from finding the true Blood of Lathander.

In fact, after I succeeded a religious check when I picked up the chunk of amber, Shadowheart said "Is this the Blood of Lathander? A bit underwhelming for a relic". Since there are no uses for it, you can sell it for 55 gold pieces.

Once you have picked it up, the quest log will update and say: "A fake artifact was disguised as the Blood of Lathander. We should keep looking for the true relic". Now you will have to solve the puzzle of the two statues right next to the display case.

Hint: if one of them gets stuck, you can use Grease on it to make it move again.
