The past few Call of Duty titles, including the latest Modern Warfare 3, require players to connect to online servers in order to launch the game.
Sometimes, the servers can crash due to some technical problems or a huge spike in the number of players logging in all of a sudden. The servers may also be taken down momentarily for maintenance purposes. Whatever the reason, here's how you can if the CoD servers are down.
How to check Call of Duty (CoD) server status
If you're having trouble logging into or playing a Call of Duty game, the first thing to do is to visit the Activision Support website. In the Online Services section, you can select the game to see if its servers are down. If it says All Platforms Online, it means the servers are up and running.
Even if the game is working for the majority of players, there can still be a large number of players facing server problems, which is more often the case in my experience. Problems like these can be identified by visiting the Downdetector website's Call of Duty page. If there's a spike in user reports in the recent graph, you're not the only one facing the server-down issues. These problems are addressed on Activision Support Twitter, so keep an eye out for that.
