Linen is an important item to get a hold of in New Cycle. But it can be really difficult to figure out how to grow it in the world, and I tripped up a little when I first started my farms.
How to grow linen in New Cycle
In order to grow linen, you'll need to be in Cycle IV: Moving Forward or later. This Cycle has a whole bunch of new items to research, including something called Crop Rotation. This will unlock the Farm and the ability to grow both wheat and linen.

But in order to grow linen properly, you will need to place your farm in the correct place. You need to make sure to place your Farm along the green parts of the map. When you select the Farm to be built, and you need to choose its location, keep moving the placement around until you find a location that looks greenish on the screen.
There will also be wheat logos around to help you find the best possible location, along with a meter in the upper lefthand part of the screen. Keep an eye out on these to make sure you get the most out of your Farm placements. These will give you an idea of how well the soil will allow these things to grow, so always keep an eye on how full the meter is when placing anything.
