Can you play Project Zomboid with a controller?

Do you need a keyboard?

While playing Project Zomboid with the traditional keyboard and mouse is fine, you might be looking for a streamlined experience while you stock up on guns. Your controller (or Steam Deck) will work, mostly, but you will have to make some concessions.

Does Project Zomboid have controller support?

Yes, you can play Project Zomboid on controller, for the most part. Most gameplay aspects work via controller, but you'll encounter some features that will require a keyboard. Be certain to keep a keyboard and mouse nearby when you need it. Some things you need a keyboard/mouse for are:

  • Zooming in/out
  • Shouting
  • Vehicle Maintenance
  • Device management
  • Inventory management

This applies to all controllers, as I have not found a controller type that doesn't work with Project Zomboid. Of course, be wary of using very old controllers, but this applies to most gaming on Steam.

Can you play Project Zomboid on Steam Deck?

Yes, you can play Project Zomboid on Steam Deck. Unlike traditional controllers, Project Zomboid on Steam Deck performs much more favorably. You may encounter a few difficulties, but players report that, overall, things work as they are supposed to.

You should get the hang of it quickly, with only a few bumps in the road. Zooming in and out still causes some problems, but you can always map this into the controls. Looting requires some patience, though.
