How to defeat the Scavenger Gorger Matron in Enshrouded (The Alchemist’s Rumours Quest)

Exploit the level design to win the fight

If you follow the quests of the Alchemist in Enshrouded, he will task you with slaying The Scavenger Gorger Matron to unlock a crafting recipe. Although she deals a lot of damage, she is easy to defeat if you know how to use the level to your advantage.

Although you can fight the Matron in melee, she is weak to arrows and spells. If you have a staff, I recommend crafting Fireball spells and getting some mana potions before heading to the camp.

Head to the Hill of Scavengers north-east from the Ancient Spire of Springlands. Before facing the Matron, you will have to defeat some of her minions; mostly Scavenger Archers are wolves. Be careful with the explosive traps by the entrances of the palisades, and mind the explosive barrels that are scattered all around the camp.

Make sure to loot the fallen enemies because some drop Explosive Powder Bombs; although these aren't effective against the Scavenger Matron, they can be useful against other strong enemies like the Fell Thunderbrute.

Head inside the tunnel; there's an anvil where you can repair your tools before the fight, and there's a silver chest that might give you a decent weapon. Be sure there are no minions that can spot you and disturb you during the fight against the boss, and head up the ramp at the end of the tunnel to find the Scavenger Matron.

You can sneak inside the arena without her noticing you, which I recommend doing to get some backstab damage with your first Fireball. You can also wait until she stands near the center and shoot the explosive barrel next to her, to take a chunk out of her health.

She has two ranged attacks: one throws two sets of three poison bombs, which are easy to dodge, and the other is a short range poison breath attack, which is dangerous because it can stun you. Try to avoid the second one by all means, since getting stunned will make you unable to move, and you'll soak all the damage.

Hare are some tactics to defeat her easily:

  • Use a staff and cast Fireball or Ice Bolt.
  • Run around her and hide behind the small palisade walls where there's a golden chest (shown in image).
  • The palisades will protect you from her attacks as long as she is far from you, if she starts to get close, get out of there and run around to kite her away.
  • Go behind the palisade again once she has moved.
  • If you run out of mana, drink mana potions or shoot at her with a bow.
  • Shoot one arrow at a time, because the animation is slow and you may not be able to dodge her attack if you shoot too many in a row.

Improved Grappling Hook recipe in Enshrouded

Once you defeat her, you'll unlock the recipe for the Improved Grappling Hook. She also drops an epic tier weapon and The Scavenger Matron Head, which you will need to Strengthen the Flame to Level 3.

To finish the quest The Alchemist's Rumours, you need to craft the Improved Grappling Hook; but you can only do this if you've freed the Carpenter from his Ancient Vault.
