One of the key mechanisms in dark RPG The Thaumaturge is finding out which Flaws are attracting salutors. To find out how can you turn these flaws to your advantage, read my thaumaturge Flaws guide below.
The Thaumaturge flaws guide - How to get and how they work
As you play through The you will occasionally have the opportunity to take on Flaws. This is often a necessity when you battle a salutor, but it can also be optional. Also, during some side and main quests, you’ll have the opportunity to rid someone of a Flaw that isn’t being affected by a salutor.
To examine the Flaws you have, press O (or up on the D-pad) to enter the Thaumaturgy menu and press X twice to get to the Flaws section. At the beginning of the game, you’ll only have your own personal Flaw, Pride. However, you’ll notice there is a section to the right where you can Acquired Flaws during the game.
How Flaws work in The Thaumaturge
Once you acquire a Flaw it will give you a passive benefit for the rest of the game, such as a bonus point to a Dimension Force or a combat benefit. They can also open new dialogue options in conversations, which can always be ignored if you choose to. So far I have found no reason to turn down a Flaw when you get the opportunity.
It is also a strong reason to hunt down all of the optional salutors as early as you can once you begin Chapter 2. Several come from side quests you can pursue as soon as the chapter begins, allowing you to capture them and use their benefits for as much of the game as possible. See the links in this guide to find out more details if required.
Available Flaws in The Thaumaturge and how to get them
I’ve discovered the following Flaws while playing The Thaumaturge. If you’ve found more I’ve not listed here, let us know in the comments below. Note that the descriptions below contain spoilers.
Ambition
Restore 5 Health Points every time you defeat an enemy, if your Health is below 9. This is your sister's Flaw. To obtain this Flaw, you need to take it from her (when prompted) just before the battle with the Golem in Chapter 2.
Audacity
Avoid death once per fight. Instead of dying, remain alive with 1 Health Point. You can earn this Flaw by capturing the salutor Djinn in Chapter 2. You’ll be offered the flaw once you break the connection between the djinn and Leila, the street thief. Start your hunt for this salutor in Nozyk Synagogue in Mirow. This is not part of the main story quest.
Fanaticism
Increases Word Dimension force by 1. You can acquire this Flaw by continuing the conversation with Wlodzimierz Konierczny, the leader of the Warsaw Anti-Thaumaturge Society, to its conclusion during Chapter 1. It is not connected to a salutor.
Negligence
Double your Combat Damage if your Health Point total is 9 or lower. You will be able to take this flaw from the artist Katejan when you remove his connection with the salutor Morana. This is an optional and time-limited quest that you start during Chapter 1 but can only complete at the beginning of Chapter 2. See my full guide to capturing Morana for details.
Pride
Increases Heart Dimension force by 1. This is your starting flaw, which is followed by Upyr. There’s no avoiding this one! It will give you a lot of extra dialogue options during conversations. These can often lead to weakening your relationship with your sister or guaranteeing a fight during tense encounters.
Recklessness
Increases Mind Dimension force by 1. You can acquire this Flaw when you capture the salutor Lelek during Chapter 1. Follow the main storyline until you come across Danis, the Cossack you end up playing Russian roulette with.
Scheming
Increases Word Dimension force by 1. You will find that Sofya Skalon has this flaw in Chapter 1. It has attracted the salutor Veles and will be available for you to take once you capture them.
Vehemence
Increases Deed Dimension force by 1. You’ll encounter this flaw as part of the main storyline when you come up against and tame the salutor Bukavac. It initially belongs to Vesna, who you’ll meet in the village during the Prologue.
