How to get Tempering Recipes in Diablo 4 Season 4

Add your own stats!

One of the new major mechanics in Diablo 4 Season 4 is the ability to custom-tailor gear using special Tempering recipes. These recipes provide a significant amount of gear customization to your build, but you need to find them first before you can use their effects.

Tempering Recipes are used with the new Tempering system, which allows you to add stats to gear. You need to find the recipe of a specific stat to add said stat to gear. Tempering Recipes are almost entirely loot drops, in that they come from killing monsters, similar to other gear drops.

Tempering Recipes have a slew of unique stats on them, and have rarities, similar to gear drops. In most cases, the higher the rarity, the more powerful the stats. Powerful enemies, such as Bosses and Elites, tend to drop high rarity Tempering Recipes.

Season 4's Helltides are a fantastic source for Tempering Recipes, as they tend to have a large number of strong enemies present at all times. Another reason Helltides are a good place to farm for them is that Helltide chests also have a high chance of dropping high-rarity Tempering Recipies. The Pit is also a strong place to farm them, as Bosses and Elites are commonplace there.

Tempering Recipe Categories

All Tempering Recipes, regardless of type or rarity, belong to one of six categories of stats.

  • Weapons - These tend to focus on stats that add Lucky Hit mechanics or buff specific class skills.
  • Offensive - These focus on stats that add Damage (DoT, Attack Speed, Critical Strike, etc...)
  • Defensive - These focus on stats that improve your survivability (Armor, Resistance, Life, etc...)
  • Utility - These focus on stats that improve your Crowd Control ability (Slow, Freeze, etc...)
  • Mobility - These focus on stats that improve your ability to move (Dodge, Run Speed, etc...)
  • Resource - These focus on stats that lower cooldowns and restore your class-specific resource.

You can only add one Tempering Recipe stat to a piece of gear, but even with the limitation, there is a lot you can do to customize your playstyle. All of these stats stack with each other, so it is possible to stack one or two of these enough to dramatically affect how you play a class. My Fire Sorcerer freezes enemies on a consistent basis, for example.
