Dead Sails Fuel Guide – Best Fuel to Find

Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire in Dead Sails!

Keeping your train chugging along is absolutely essential in Dead Sails, because if you run out of fuel, you're stuck, and you do not want that to happen at night. This guide is all about the different kinds of fuel you can find scattered around the world, which ones give you the most bang for your buck, and how to keep that firebox roaring.

Best Fuels to Find in Dead Sails

To effectively fuel your train and survive the long haul in Dead Sails, you need to know which items burn the longest and keep that firebox fed. Pretty much anything flammable (and some things that maybe shouldn't be) can be shoved into your train's firebox to keep it moving in Dead Sails.

You'll find stuff lying around in buildings, out in the open, and sometimes, you might even need to use… unconventional sources such as corpses. But not all fuel is created equal. Some items will barely get you down the track, while others will keep you going for kilometers.

What is the best fuel to find in Dead Sails

Let's cut to the chase: what should you really be looking for?

  • Coal: This is your go-to fuel. It's the most efficient common resource you'll find. A single piece of Coal will power your train for roughly 4km. You can find it sometimes in buildings, especially mines, and you can reliably buy it at the General Store in forts. Always grab Coal when you see it!
  • Unicorn: Okay, this one's probably not something you'll stumble upon often, if ever, but if you do find a Unicorn, it's the absolute best fuel source, giving you a massive 15.8km of travel. Good luck finding one, though!

When Coal isn't available, you'll need to make do with other items. Here's a rough idea of how far other common (and not-so-common) items will get you:

This list is a work in progress, as more items and their fuel values are still being found.

  • Werewolf Corpse: Surprisingly decent fuel, giving about 2.5km.
  • Barrel: Good for about 2km.
  • Chair: Provides around 1.7km.
  • Rope: Gets you roughly 1.5km.
  • Wood Painting: Worth about 1.3km.
  • Book: Gives you 1km.
  • Wheel: Also good for 1km.
  • Zombie Corpse: Not great, but usable in a pinch, providing 700m.
  • Wolf Corpse: Slightly less effective than a zombie, at 600m.
  • Horse Corpse: Only gives 500m.
  • Vampire Corpse: Same as a horse, 500m.
  • Newspaper: Barely worth the effort, only provides 120m.

As you can see, sticking to Coal is ideal, but items like barrels, chairs, and even bodies can keep you going when needed. Using bodies might feel weird, but when you're stranded, you do what you gotta do! But basically hunt for any item that has the label Fuel when you highlight the object, as this is what you should be using to fuel your train!

How to use the Firebox in Dead Sails

Fueling the train is simple:

  1. Locate the Firebox: It's the big furnace-looking thing on the train, right next to the control dials.
  2. Grab Your Fuel: Pick up a fuel item (like Coal, corpses, etc)
  3. Stuff it In: Walk up to the Firebox opening and drag the the fuel inside.
  4. Monitor the Gauge: Look above the Firebox opening and to the right. There's a fuel gauge that goes up to 100%. Adding fuel will make the gauge go up. Driving the train will make it go down. Keep a close eye on this gauge!

Seriously, keeping your train fueled is the most critical part of staying alive. Running out leaves you stranded, vulnerable, and possibly facing a terrifying night stuck in the middle of nowhere. Never let your fuel run out, especially when it's getting dark! Always try to have extra fuel stored on your train or cart.
