Amnesia the Bunker monster explained

Down in the caves, no-one's safe!

Amnesia: The Bunker puts a refreshing spin on the Amnesia series by putting us in the boots of a French soldier stuck in a vast bunker during the Great War. Escape seemed to me like an easy prospect after the game told me that I needed only to blow open my way to liberty if only I hadn't heard the scratching in the walls soon after I read that note. The previous experience in earlier Amnesia games taught me that I wasn't alone in the bunker and that the Beast would get me if I made the wrong move. But what is Amnesia: The Bunker's monster, and how to beat it?

What is the Monster in Amnesia: The Bunker?

Early into the storyline of Amnesia: The Bunker, you, as the protagonist soldier called Henri Clement, wake from an unconscious state in the infirmary due to injuries sustained in an artillery explosion and find out you're all alone in a French bunker. But it soon turns out that the enemy soldiers weren't the ones to be blamed for killing an entire company of soldiers in the bunker; instead, the perpetrator is something far more nefarious.

Your comrade, Augustin Lambert, was the one that carried you to the bunker, saving your life. Drinking some sweet water from the bomb crater, he suddenly got a surge of strength to get you both out and safely into the allied bunker. Despite your injuries, you were able to survive just so. Over the following days, Augustin started losing his mind and humanity.

Unlike the previous Amnesia iterations, the monster in Amnesia: The Bunker is real and not a product of the main protagonist's imagination. You can notice its handiwork all over the bunker you find yourself in. Dead bodies and body parts strewn everywhere tell a story of chaos; the soldiers didn't know what hit them. They were panicking, attempting to put up makeshift barricades and, eventually, locking themselves into their private quarters in desperation. But it came for them all regardless.

Tips on how to survive the Beast in Amnesia: The Bunker

The Beast, as referred to by the creators of Amnesia: The Bunker, is a humanoid figure with elongated arms ending with large talons and beast-like rear legs. One of its marking features is that it hates the light, which goes well with its subterranean appearance. It moves in the bunker's walls, creating all kinds of noises, using holes strewn all over the bunker as means of entry. Listening to their cues is vital for survival in this game, as it can sometimes forwarn you that the Beast is coming.

Here are a couple of general tips to help you survive the Beast encounters in Amnesia the Bunker:

  • Only the Admin Room is safe as there are no holes in it, be sure to lock both doors.
  • Know where the hide spots are at all times. Closets are the best for this purpose.
  • Listen to the sound cues. If the Beast is nearby, refrain from making loud noises, and don't charge your dynamo flashlight.
  • If you see lights start to flicker nearby, that also means that the Beast is coming, and you need to seek a hiding place immediately.

How to repel the Beast attacks in Amnesia: The Bunker

You can't kill the Beast during the course of the main Amnesia: The Bunker campaign, but you can repel its attacks, so once it has spotted you, it doesn't have to mean certain death for you.

  • Use gas by detonating a gas bomb or shooting at the gas tank. You will need a gas mask, which you can find in N. Laval's locker in the Mission Storage room, locked by a code combination.
  • Shoot it with a revolver. It will make it go away for a short time, but mind your positioning; it will charge toward the nearest hole, and if you're in the way, it will swipe at you.
  • Throw a grenade at it. Quickly get out of its way afterward.
  • Set it on fire. The safer method is to use Molotov cocktails. To make a Molotov cocktail, you need to craft it from an empty bottle, a gas can, and a rug. You will also need a lighter to set it on fire.
