They say that fear of the unknown is the greatest fear of all. We would argue that the greatest fear is being stuck on a spaceship with a host of corpse monsters looking to add you to their ranks. The Dead Space Remake promises to be a bigger and better version of the 2008 original. However, of all the departments it needs to succeed in, scaring the crap out of players has to be the top.
Is the Dead Space Remake scary?
This is a tough one to answer and we think it boils down to if a player is in one of two camps. The first category is for those new to the series. If this is your first time aboard the USG Ishimura, may Altman have mercy on your soul as the improved graphics, audio, and design will likely have you jumping out of your skin. The Ishimura feels like a living thing and we tread lightly through its claustrophobic hallways back in 2008 lest we awoke something. Dead Space is a game that builds dread in the player, keeping them in a constant state of unease, and then harvesting that fear at its ripest.
The second camp is for those that have played the original trilogy. If that's the case, then this will likely feel like a homecoming. Don't get us wrong, Dead Space is a scary game, but Isaac Clarke is a monster in his own right and the USG Ishimura is an iconic horror location. This haunted ship is akin to the town of Silent Hill or the Spencer Estate from Resident Evil. The fear is still there, but it takes a backseat to nostalgia and wonder. It's like being reunited with an old friend. Either way, new or old, the Marker welcomes all.
