Is Diablo 4 an MMO?

Has Hell taken over the MMO genre?

Diablo IV is the latest entry in the Diablo series, released on most platforms, and players will be facing off against Lillith in this new story. Follow her across Sanctuary and face the forces of Hell alone or with other players. With its multiplayer aspects, you may be wondering if Diablo IV is an MMO.

Diablo IV, Is it an MMO?

Diablo IV is not an MMO but has features found in MMOs. This includes world bosses, social hubs, mounts, and more. Diablo IV can be described as having shared-world elements, but ultimately the developer wanted to retain that feeling of isolation Diablo II captured. Diablo IV is broken into open world but fixed zones, and players can earn renown in these zones. These are linked together by roads, allowing the player to travel to and from them.

Additionally, Diablo IV does not feature servers as most MMOs do. Regions are their own instances, containing varying numbers of players. This determines how many players you can find while playing. Towns will feature higher player caps, meaning you will see more players. While exploring the wilderness, players will be encountered less frequently.

While Blizzard wants to make Diablo IV more social, it is not a full-fledged MMO. Instead, it used light MMO elements to create a shared world that allows players to play at their preferred pace. Feel free to play alone or group up with friends and strangers across Sanctuary.

Despite this, fans and players call Diablo IV an MMO and treat it as such. Many plan on playing the game as an MMO, and Diablo IV should offer enough content to play it with that mindset. You are free to do so, but know that the official developer, Blizzard, does not consider Diablo IV as such.
