Each critter will require that you feed them the food they enjoy the most. But how many times you need to do this is the real question. Once you feed a critter once a day for the number of days they require, you'll unlock them, and they can become a companion.

Pull up your wardrobe and click on companions to make a critter your companion after you've unlocked them. You can choose a critter to equip from all the ones you've unlocked in any part of Disney Dreamlight Valley - whether from the base game or one of the DLCs. Your companion will follow you around as you play, though they cannot go beyond the ground floor of your house.
