Chickens need a Chicken Coop for you to raise them properly. You can get one from William's Trading Post around Day 3 (after collecting the materials William needs). Speak to William or either of the Daniels behind the table at the front of the Trading Post. Then, select the Order option.

The Chicken Coop will cost you 500 Salt to order and will arrive in your Mailbox in a day. When your order arrives, it will automatically fix up the gated area at the left of your farm to be your Chicken Coop.

After you have your Chicken Coop up and running, you can now get a chicken for the coop. Head down from your farm, and you'll spot a wild chicken wandering around. Approaching it will give you the option to pet it. Now that you have the coop, petting will tame the chicken and add it to your farm.

Chickens will provide you with eggs regularly, which is why they are such a great asset for your farm. However, you will have to take good care of them for eggs to be lain. They will need food and plenty of love.

You can buy Chicken Feed from William's Trading Post under the Buy option and listed under Other. They cost around 30 Salt each, and he will restock them regularly for you to keep buying.

Once you purchase the feed, head over to your Chicken Coop, and on the trough inside the coop, you'll see a prompt pop up allowing you to place the feed inside it.

You will also need to pet your chicken as often as you can to ensure they feel loved. A heart will pop up over their head after you do. However, you'll need to make sure they are fed before doing this, or they will just beg for food. When they are fed and loved, the next day, you're sure to find some eggs to collect.
