Your formation has three main groups: front, rear, and support. The front units are usually tanks and damage dealers, while the units in the rear usually heal, control status alignments, and attack from a distance. Below is the formation that proved to be the best for Proving Grounds in my playtime.

You can put three units in the front line, and their placement is important. The middle unit usually takes the most damage, so the front middle slot goes to Yuthus. This shield-bearing guy is a great tank unit, but he can also jump in and protect other frontliners from attacks.

The side slots are reserved for the two mandatory characters for this part of the game. The upper slot goes to our protagonist, Nowa. He's a well-rounded character, but his greatest quality is his ability to combine powers with other characters. The other side slot goes to Garoo, a humanoid kangaroo with a giant sword and an Australian accent. He's a sturdy, damage-dealing unit, similar to Garr.

Marisa is one of the three mandatory characters for Proving Grounds, and she's a Guardian, like Garoo. She's a great support unit that can heal but also deal solid damage with her Rune Lens and melee attacks. Marisa takes the center position because she's the most durable out of the three.

Francesca is a great asset to any formation because she's a combination of a melee fighter and a healer. She can heal entire parties and unleash devastating combos on enemy units. However, she's not very good at taking damage, so we put her on the upper flank.

Finally, there's Kuroto with his trustworthy crossbow. He's a great ranged unit, but when equipped with the right Rune, he can also heal allies in trouble. Kuroto's position is in the lower flank because he often stands on the higher ground, which improves his accuracy.

The best Support unit for Proving Grounds is Cassandra, the elf lady innkeeper. Despite not giving any bonuses in gathering resources, Cassandra is immensely useful. When you have her at your party, you can change the formation at any save point instead of going to the inn.
