Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes Beginner's Guide - Tips & Tricks

Each time you think you’ve learned all you need to know in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, it seems to throw something new at you. Some of the help guides in the game are great but there are a lot of details glossed over that I’d have liked to have known from the beginning. That's exactly what this list is.

10. Inventory space isn’t as obvious as it should be

Your Inventory while on the road is split into three sections. Valuables are quest items with no limit. The other two inventory areas are Items and Materials but these are counted separately, meaning any materials you pick up from gathering nodes will not impact your Items limit.

Note different item types have different stack amounts, and one stack is an item space so six Healing Herbs only actually use one inventory space, but seven will use up two. This means you can carry a lot more than it seems but certain items (such as Runes, which always take up one space each) can soon fill your inventory. Make use of your town storage space to make sure you won’t run out.

9. Stock up on Runeshard of Return

I didn’t see one of these drop as loot anywhere in the early game but you can buy them from the same stores (such as the Tool Shop) that sell Healing Herbs. They’re super handy for grinding, or just getting out of trouble if you’re low on Herbs, as they transport you back to the beginning of a dungeon. They cost 100 but it’s always worth having a couple in your backpack (they stack to three).

8. Spells and actions can change turn order

If you’re using a caster with an elemental Rune to cast a spell, be sure to check its impact on their turn order position. Some spells, such as Healing Drops, will often move the caster forward in turn order, allowing them to heal before even faster mobs attack. But other spells trigger more slowly. Also, note that defensive stances can also move you forward in turn order. This can be a good move if a hero is low on health, and hasn't built up a strong attack, but they're not a heal priority this turn.

7. Free revival

As long as your party doesn’t wipe, anyone who falls during the battle will be revived for the next fight on 1 HP. This means you don’t have to waste actions on revival near the end of a battle when you can simply wait until afterward to use Herbs rather than more expensive restores. Also, if you’re near a town, you can usually sleep and get everyone up to full health for a low cost (or for free).

6. Front and back row battle positions

Be careful where you put your heroes in your battle lineup but also where the game puts them. S heroes can only attack one space forward, so if they accidentally end up in the back row they can’t use normal attacks. M heroes in the back row can only attack mobs in the front row, which may not be ideal. However, as front-row mobs are defeated, the back-row ones will move forward to occupy the empty spaces. I like to have a couple of quick L heroes in the back row who can target any enemy and at least one M in the front row for the same reason.

5. Go your way

Don’t feel you need to follow the storyline all the time; it’s often worth exploring in different directions to gain a bit of bonus XP and even find some new heroes to recruit. While some parts of the story don’t let you roam freestyle, it’s always worth testing this to try and gain an advantage and the game never tells you that the option to go off-piste is available. Just try leaving in a different direction and see what happens. You can learn how to fish much earlier than you might think, for example.

4. Use your base to heal for free

Whether you’re in Eltisweiss or have moved onto the Ruined Fortress and started creating your city, staying at Cassandra’s place is always free (select Stay). While you may want to get a quick HP and MP boost while you’re out on the road, remember that those random encounters don’t level up with you. This means that even if you’re quite a way from your base, getting there is often relatively risk-free. So if you have the patience, save cash by sleeping in your bed! Time is not a factor in the game, so you’re not missing out on anything by doing so.

3. Resource nodes restock over time

While chests won’t magically refill with cool loot (shame), resource spots do replenish over time. This happens quite quickly, allowing you to grind XP and cash as well as resources if you want to, in areas such as the Abandoned Mines or Redthroat Ridge. This won’t make you rich but it's a good way to get lower-level recruits up to speed while grinding any resources you may need for a city upgrade.

2. Using Attendant Spaces in your hero roster

Attendant spaces in your roster aren’t properly explained as you play and it can look as if you don’t have any eligible heroes for them early on. However, you actually do. The way they work is that they can only be occupied by heroes who need to be in your party for the current story quest

This means you don't have to use all of these heroes (including Nowa) in combat if you don’t want to. You can choose any character in your party that has a lock on them and move them to one of the Attendant Positions putting a character you prefer into a fighting slot. They'll even get a small amount of XP while being attendants, so it helps your overall XP gains.

1. The secret passage from the Ruined Fortress to Grum County

Once you've started to rebuild your resources in the Abandoned Ruins, you don’t have to just follow the main storyline. There are a lot of useful recruits and resources to be had back in Grum County and while the game doesn’t tell you, you can get there any time.

Go to the ground floor of the Ruined Fortress and through the central door in the back wall that leads to the cemetery. As you get outside you’ll see a well to your right. Walk up to it and you can go back down into the Abandoned Mines. You can find a lot of important recruits in the old villages and the mines themselves, allowing you to do everything from opening an Armor Store to getting your Mines up and running.
