Hint: You can lower your pride in this battle and just opt for an easier fight.

Recommended Phoenix Party Setup

Phoenix is a hell of a tough boss to beat due to its massive health pool and a wide array of A.O.E. spells that can decimate your entire party if you're unprepared. For this battle, I recommend either going with the default setup of Red XIII, Cloud, and Aerith or following my party setup:

  • Cloud with Blizzard/Blizzara and Cure
  • Tifa with Defaith, and Elemental Defense + Fire. Optional: Cure.
  • Aerith with Blizzard/Blizzara, Cure + Magnify, Manaward + Magnify

Manaward and Defaith will allow you to live through the fiery attacks of Phoenix, and Blizzard/Blizzara will target Phoenix's weakness. It's also vital to have at least one level of Cure on two of your party members, as items are disabled in Chadley's Combat Simulator.

Phoenix - Phase 1

Phoenix will automatically cast Breath of Life at the beginning of the fight, followed by Breath of Creation. Here are all of the monsters Phoenix will summon in its first Phase:

  1. Flan
  2. Bomb
  3. Grandhorn

If any of the monsters above are alive, Phoenix will almost be invulnerable to any form of damage, so make sure to eliminate the monsters as they appear one by one to avoid being overwhelmed in the fight.

After you stagger Phoenix, use Tifa and her Unbridled Power skill to massively increase the stagger multiplier and deal as much damage as possible. You can also command Aerith to start casting Blizzara while Phoenix is staggered, so the timing will coincide after Tifa has increased the stagger multiplier.

Be on the constant lookout for Phoenix's Empowering Flame amidst the chaos. This skill will increase Phoenix's magic damage. On its second uninterrupted cast, Phoenix will use Rebirth Flame, which can and most likely will one-shot your entire party without Manaward. To interrupt Empowering Flame, have Cloud and Aerith cast Blizzard/Blizzara on Phoenix.

Phoenix - Phase 2

After the first stagger, Phoenix will once again use Breath of Life to summon another set of three monsters. This time, the monsters are more powerful and are as follows:

  1. Archdragon
  2. Fleetwing
  3. Ogre

Once you defeat all three, you should be very wary of Empowering Flame. Command Aerith to cast Manaward on all of your party members so you can survive the Rebirth Flame. If there's still time, have Tifa cast Defaith as well.

Three scenarios will appear at this stage: failing to interrupt Empowering Flame and surviving Rebirth Flame, failing the entire mission, or interrupting Empowering Flame.

If you manage to survive Rebirth Flame, immediately summon Ramuh to help you fend off three random monsters that Phoenix will summon at the same time. Phoenix is not tethered to any of the three monsters after Rebirth Flame, so it will be vulnerable to attacks.

Of course, the best-case scenario would be to interrupt Empowering Flame. Regardless, Ramuh should be your main focus in dealing damage so you can quickly stagger Phoenix in its second phase.

Do the same cycle with Tifa increasing the stagger multiplier, and having Cloud and Aerith cast Blizzard/Blizzara while Phoenix is staggered. Alternatively, you can cast your Limit Breaks at this point to eliminate Phoenix much quicker.

How to unlock Phoenix secret boss in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

To unlock Phoenix in Chadley's Combat Simulator, you need to fight all monsters within the entire Junon area. Here are all the monsters:

  • Orc
  • Grassland Wolf
  • Zemzelett
  • Fleetwing
  • Ignilisk
  • Enmidunk
  • Fonadu
  • Whymzelett
  • Silver Chimera

Four of these monsters (i.e. Enmidunk, Fonadu, Whymzelett, and Silver Chimera) are in our full FF7 Rebirth Walkthrough, should you need any help with taking them down.

After fighting all of the monsters, you need to head to Chadley's location at the Chocobo Ranch (see map above). Talk to him, and you'll have access to his Combat Assignments. Clear all of his Junon-related missions, and you'll unlock Summon Entity: Phoenix. Here are the missions needed to unlock the Phoenix secret boss fight:

  • Junon Battle Intel: White Squall (Enmidunk & Silver Chimera Battle)
  • Junon Battle Intel: Conqueror of the Skies (Fonadu and Whymzelett Battle)
  • Junon Region Intel: Level 1 (Battle three rounds of monsters from Junon)
  • Junon Region Intel: Level 2 (Battle three rounds of monsters from Junon)

One final thing to consider before battling Phoenix is that you can choose any difficulty, and Chadley will still give you Phoenix's materia. So don't be shy in lowering the difficulty if you're getting frustrated against Phoenix's Full Might.
