How to wrangle every Chocobo in FF7 Rebirth

Wark!

Chocobo wrangling is probably one of the most frustrating parts of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, more so since they’re essential for exploration. If you’re having trouble wrangling all chocobos across the continent, this is your guide.

The only chocobo I didn’t include is the Grassland’s field chocobo, which can easily be caught during its tutorial.

Junon’s Mountain Chocobo

Belle, Junon’s Mountain Chocobo, can only be caught by skillfully hiding behind these moving crates. The crates will only move if you pull the lever. Thus, the trick is to move as they move, which is easier said than done, especially in the last part.

If you’re consulting this guide, you’re probably stuck here. You start the sequence by throwing a rock from this batch of tall grass and keep yourself to the side of the cart that is away from the chocobos’ eyes.

Start by following the cart from the outer circle.

Once you reach the back corner, transition from the outer circle to the inner circle to avoid the gaze of the chocobo on your right. Roll if you need to, but do it quickly.

Then, once you’ve passed it, transition once again to the outer circle until you can get behind Belle. Do NOT roll when you’re near any chocobo as the sound can give you away.

Cosmo Canyon’s Soaring Chocobo

Much like Junon, Cosmo Canyon’s Soaring Chocobo, Aponi, requires a minigame pass to reach. This time, you’ll have to hide behind wagons. It’s a little tricker compared to Junon too, as your hiding spots often only work when they’re not looking in your direction.

To get past the first round of Chocobos, just be sure you’re on the side of the cart they’re not looking at. You can both push and pull them, by the way.

Change the track when this Chocobo is not looking.

To avoid the gaze of the next Chocobo, push the wagon to its front and switch sides when it’s not looking.

After this, you’ll need to switch tracks. Leave your wagon before the intersection and pick up some rocks. Throw one of them behind the Chocobo to get it to turn its head.

Run towards the lever and pull it while it's distracted.

After changing tracks, just continue towards Aponi with all the wagon pulling knowledge I’ve taught you. You need to push the wagon all the way to the end of the tracks.

Once you’ve reached the end, throw a rock to get Aponi to look at it.

Its attention span is very short, so it’ll only be distracted for a while. Roll to its behind quickly and wrangle!

Nibel’s Ocean Chocobo

Nibel’s ocean chocobo, Selena, is wrangled using a method different from the rest. Instead of sneaking up to her location, you need to lure her near the entrance with bait.

To start, climb up this hill and take a bunch of chocobo bait from the grass (they spawn infinitely, so you’ll never run out). Move where Selena is initially and start throwing bait.

The path you need to follow is marked with chocobo tracks. Remember to avoid the cacti, or Selena will get hurt. Too much damage and she’ll run back to her safe space.

This is the ideal space you want her to be at.

Roll out of the grass and press Triangle. It’s okay if the other chocobo spots you; your wrangling is faster!

Chocobos you don't have to wrangle

The following Chocobos can be obtained as long as you progress through FF7 Rebirth's story. I'll note down when you can get them as well.

  • Corel's Chocobo (for the part near Costa Del Sol): After the events at Costa Del Sol's beach, take one of the quests on the town's bulletin board
  • Gongaga's Forest Chocobo: After you assess the state of the Gongaga reactor
