Minds Beneath Us Walkthrough - All Endings, Explained

The storyline in Mind Beneath follows a mostly linear path through each chapter. Starting in Chapter 3, however, that path will begin to branch out when you decide whether to join the Screening team or the Ops team. Job-related activities will change for Jason depending on what you choose, but it doesn't necessarily affect which ending you receive.

What actually impacts the ending you get is the choice you have Jason make near the end of Chapter 5 when he's confronted on the rooftop by OWL and its masked ringleader, Grandma. At one point, Situ approaches Jason, offers him her pistol from earlier, and pleads for him to join OWL if he wants to continue the fight to take down Vision and Project Sleeping God, as well as to protect Fran and himself.

Four different options will pop up on the screen (no time limit) for you to choose from, and this is the final choice that will determine your ending. In essence, this means that there are four possible endings to the game.

After completing this chapter and the game for the first time, if you hit 'Continue' from the Main Menu you will be taken right back to the rooftop scene, allowing you to experience all of the endings in succession if you desire.

However, be aware that none of the game's achievements relate to these specific endings. You will only receive the "Your life, your choice" achievement for choosing one of those options for the first time.

Also, how you've chosen to have Jason conduct himself during miscellaneous conversations with various characters may impact their perception of him during these final cutscenes. Our walkthrough reflects choosing mostly positive and proactive responses from Jason with everyone.

Ending #1 - Take the gun and join OWL

If you choose the first option during the confrontation on the rooftop, which has Jason take the offered gun and join OWL, the following events will occur:

  • When Jason and Fran talk about their future with OWL in their apartment, Fran is excited and hopeful about what's to come. No matter what comes their way, she insists that she and Jason remain a team.
  • Wayne takes over as Screening's division manager, and the team congratulates him. They also wonder what happened to Jason, but agree that he'll always be welcomed back. Meanwhile, Justin of Ops announces he's leaving the company. Despite disagreement, Wayne understands and they part ways.
  • Yuna tells Shane in the Red Room that he's been ousted as CEO of Vision and that Project Sleeping God will be taken over by a different team.
  • Lawrence and 23 will be sitting in the safehouse, talking about their decisions that led to the outcome. 23 apologizes for her brief betrayal, and the two come to an understanding and resolve to keep the safehouse running, for their and Situ's sake.
  • Jason and Situ meet near his apartment building to talk about starting with OWL, and to spend time with loved ones while they can.
  • After the credits, the original Jason Dai will bid farewell, walking out through the mysterious door that's been sealed the entire game. He vanishes into the bright light.
  • The camera then pivots to a much darker setting, back to the hospital room from the start of the game. The Anomaly on the other side of the glass addresses the player, congratulating them on a job well done for choosing to "live" as a human (or a MBU within a human) should. It says they will meet again in the future and the screen then cuts to black.
    • This is the only ending where this specific cutscene appears.

Ending #2 - Join OWL but refuse the gun

If you choose the second option during the confrontation on the rooftop, in which Jason joins OWL but refuses Situ's gun, the following events will occur:

  • Jason will approach Situ, refusing her pistol and you'll receive additional dialogue options to express your distrust of her after everything that's happened. Essentially, Jason joins OWL but decides to keep Situ at arm's length.
  • Most of the following cutscenes remain the same as when choosing Option 1, however, the one with Jason and Situ at the bridge near his apartment will have an entirely different dialogue.
    • While understanding some of the choices she made, Jason still considers Situ someone dangerous and potentially a threat in the future. However, they agree to not ostracize one another and come to a mutual-enough understanding.

Ending #3 - Use stun grenade and escape

If you choose the third option during the confrontation on the rooftop, where Jason uses the stun grenade to escape OWL, the following events will occur:

  • Jason will use the stored stun grenade to cover his escape. OWL attempts to track him down but to no avail.
  • Fran contacts Situ about her progress with finding Jason, which they've yet to do. Fran resolves to make her own choices and find Jason one way or another herself.
  • Jason appears in front of a locked shutter gate, with Ivan standing nearby. It's not explicitly stated where they are, but at least one possibility is the headquarters of the Moonflowers, which Ivan leads. Ivan persistently questions Jason about his personal life and the risks he's willing to take. Jason holds firm that he must choose this path and Ivan believes in his resolve. The screen fades to black as the gate opens.
  • All other cutscenes from Options 1 and 2 (aside from Jason meeting Situ at the bridge) remain the same.

Ending #4 - Blow the facility up

If you choose the fourth option during the confrontation on the rooftop, where Jason detonates the bombs in facility housing Project Sleeping God, the following events will occur:

  • Jason will activate the detonation device without warning, which will cause the entire facility housing Project Sleeping God to be destroyed beneath the building. CEO Shane Yan lashes angrily out at Jason, demanding to know why he did it and whether he realizes the consequences.
    • Situ will ask as well, to which you can choose from a few different options. They all lead to the same outcome. Grandma will ask Jason if he has any last words, giving you again a few options that range from peaceful to aggressive. The screen then fades to black as Jason is executed.
  • A news broadcast plays in the background of the empty living of Jason and Fran's apartment. The loss of automated technology across the region with Vision no longer able to provide power via its flop farms has led to the breakdown of crucial, life-saving services.
  • Yuna and Shane have a conversation, this time on the lobby floor of the building rather than in the Red Room (now destroyed). Yuna still says that Project Sleeping God will continue, though doesn't elaborate on how. A new CEO and team will take over, while Shane Yan is fired. The dialogue here varies substantially from the other versions, but the ending is the same.
  • A scene between Situ and Fran in the undercover van plays out, with Fran visibly distraught. Situ insists that Vision is crumbling piece by piece at the hands of their competitors and that Jason did what had to be done. Fran lashes out at her, saying that he didn't need to sacrifice himself and that she no longer trusts Situ as she once did.
    • Situ laments what's happened and regrets losing Jason due to her cold-hearted decision-making. She and Fran agree to disagree on the worth of what happened, and Fran asks what Jason's last words were. Her reaction will vary according to what Jason chooses.
