Who is Rhinedottir/Gold in Genshin Impact?

All that glitters isn't always Gold.

The history of Teyvat in Genshin Impact is shrouded in many mysteries and secrets, with multiple major events being lost to time or only talked about in whispers. The Cataclysm is one such event that shook the world to its core, leaving scars on Teyvat and its people that can still be felt in the present day.

While most of what happened during that period of time is still unknown to the Traveler, the game has slowly revealed more information about one character heavily involved in the events leading up to The Cataclysm—Rhinedottir, the genius alchemist from Khaenri'ah.

Note: Minor Genshin Impact spoilers for Rhinedottir/Gold follow.

Rhinedottir/Gold

Rhinedottir, also known as Gold, was an influential resident of Khaenri'ah before its fall 500 years ago. She was considered a prodigious alchemist and researcher, developing and mastering the Art of Khemia. The Abyss influenced Gold to use this unique form of alchemy to create all sorts of living beings that can still be seen in Teyvat, such as Rifthounds. Her most monstrous and terrifying creation, however, was the venomous and corrupted dragon, Durin.

Rhinedottir also pioneered the Priomordial Human Project, which was intended to create humans through the use of alchemy. Her first creation in this project was known as Primordial Albedo, though Gold deemed him a failure and allowed Durin to swallow him. Unknown to her, Primordial Albedo would survive these events and start to harbor resentment toward her other creations.

It has been implied within the game that Gold's creation of these creatures caught the attention of Celestia, bringing divine wrath down upon the nation of Khaenri'ah for her transgressions. Gold survived this event relatively unscathed, however, and would go on to continue her work in the Primordial Human Project. She was eventually able to see her efforts come to fruition in the form of Albedo, teaching him alchemy and tasking him with learning the truth of the world.

Not much is known about what happened to Gold after parting ways with Albedo, though she's almost certain to make an appearance in Genshin Impact at some point in the future. On top of being involved in the events of The Cataclysm and creating Albedo, she also appears to know pivotal characters such as Alice and Dainsleif and has ties to the Abyss, meaning that the Traveler and Paimon will most likely meet Rhinedottir in person before their journey is over.
