How to Play Colordle

Colordle is a free daily puzzle created by Ryan Tanenholz. Every day, a new color is hidden, and your job is to figure out its exact name. Here's how the game works from scratch:

  1. Head over to colordle.ryantanen.com.
  2. Type the name of any color you know into the guess box.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Use the similarity percentage that the game instantly shows as a guide. This tells you how close your guess is to the hidden color on the color spectrum.
  5. Keep guessing and narrowing it down until you hit 100%.

There's also an unlimited practice mode on the site if you want extra rounds beyond the daily puzzle.

Colordle Tips and Strategy

New to the game or just stuck in a rut? These five strategies will sharpen your approach in no time:

  • Start with a primary color. Kick off with something broad like Red, Blue, Green, or Yellow. The percentage you get back immediately tells you which corner of the color wheel to explore.
  • Watch for big percentage jumps. A jump of 20% or more between guesses usually means you've landed in the right hue family. Smaller jumps often mean you're adjusting brightness or saturation rather than hue.
  • Change one thing at a time. Once you're in the right ballpark, tweak just one quality like going lighter, darker, warmer, or cooler rather than jumping to a completely unrelated color.
  • Learn the obscure names. The game pulls from over 200 named colors, and some of them, like Verdigris, Celadon, or Birchwood, won't come to mind naturally. Browsing the answer history on this page is a great way to build your vocabulary.
  • When stuck above 70%, think shades, not colors. At this point, you're close. Start guessing specific shades. If you're near blue, try Cobalt, Sapphire, Cornflower, or Steel Blue in sequence.

Colordle FAQ

What time does Colordle reset each day?

Colordle resets at midnight local time, so the puzzle updates based on wherever you are in the world. If the puzzle hasn't refreshed yet when you load the page, you may still be on yesterday's color.

How many guesses do you get in Colordle?

Colordle doesn't have a strict guess limit the way Wordle does. You can keep guessing until you hit 100% similarity, so it's more about getting there efficiently than racing against a guess counter.

What's the difference between Colordle and Colorfle?

They're two different games despite the similar names. Colordle asks you to guess the name of a hidden color using a similarity percentage score. Colorfle is a color mixing puzzle where you try to recreate a target color by combining other colors.

Is Colordle free to play?

Yes, Colordle is completely free. There's no account required, no download, and no paywall. Just open the site and start guessing.

Can I play Colordle on my phone?

Yes, you can. The game runs in any mobile browser and includes an on-screen keyboard, so you don't need a physical keyboard to play.
