Reno Mage was quite a powerful list when the first edition of Reno Jackson was released to the public in the League of Explorers adventure. While it won't be able to heal itself back to full like before, it can now do some crazy things via Zephrys the Great , Reno the Relicologist , and King Phaoris . The big piece of the puzzle, however, is Luna's Pocket Galaxy that will make all of your minions cost 1-mana. If you're in need of a miracle to happen, then Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron will hopefully have your back! Will this archetype make it through the Uldum meta? Well, that remains to be seen!

Highlander Mage Mulligan Guide

Always Keep

  • Ancient Mysteries - Gets you a cheap early play, and removes a Secret from your deck that you don't have to draw.
  • Doomsayer - This should stall early boards against aggressive and midrange decks. It's not a proactive play, so we're not in love with it, but we also don't have a lot of great early options.
  • Frostbolt - Takes down an early minion allowing you time to get deeper into the game.
  • Zephrys the Great - We'd ideally like to hold onto this into the late game for a lethal or a big get out of jail free card, but we're weak in the early game and it can help us quite a bit.
  • Messenger Raven - Gives us an early minion in play and gets us an additional card to hopefully play in the following turns.
  • Luna's Pocket Galaxy - This is one of the best cards in the deck, and if you can guarantee it in your hand then it's worth the risk of keeping it.

Situational Keeps

  • Arcane Intellect - We want to draw a bunch of cards to fill up our hand for future turns. It's worth keeping if you have another card that you are keeping.

General Gameplay Tips

Highlander lists are very fun but can be somewhat hard to play. A lot of the skill involved starts with the mulligan, and understanding which cards you need for what particular matchup. If you're in a slow match, then you'll want to make sure to keep your more powerful cards that might be 4+ mana. If you're against aggressive archetypes, then you obviously want to try and pick stuff that will help keep you in the game!

We're mainly looking to stabilize in the early game and just keep things from getting too far out of hand. We can sometimes be at the mercy of what kind of hand we end up with due to the nature of singleton decks. Doomsayer and Frost Nova is one of our classic combos, but we also have other AOE chances, even with Reno the Relicologist himself.

What we are really looking for is to hit Luna's Pocket Galaxy on curve. If we can do that, then we have a much greater possibility of winning. Each minion we draw from then on is going to be 1-mana, and that enables a lot of shenanigans.

Conjurer's Calling can be insane if you can play it on a Mountain Giant . It guarantees that you will get two Grave Horror , which is a 7/8 Taunt. So, you can have a pretty insane board very early in the game.

As we head into the late game, we've hopefully gotten ahead with our advantage of having 1-cost minions in our deck. However, we're not always going to do that, so we do have some ways to get back into the game. One of them is Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron ! This isn't always going to go in our favor, but there's a pretty good chance it will end up clearing the board. King Phaoris is a pretty nutty card, we've got a lot of high cost spells, so we should be able to get quite a strong board if we can play this.

Other Card Choices

The sky is the limit when it comes to the Highlander archetype. You generally try to tailor it to beat whatever meta you are facing. If you are facing a lot of aggro, then try for more early game focus. If you're playing a lot of slow decks, then add more late game cards.

  • Novice Engineer - Early game card draw, could be worth it!
  • Vulpera Scoundrel - Generates us a possibly useful spell, or we could go for the mystery spell and see if we end up with something better than the original options!
  • Twilight Drake - It's a similar card to Mountain Giant, and we will usually have a high hand count.
  • Arcane Keysmith - Another card that generates us additional value and gives us more flexibility.
  • Astromancer - We usually have quite a few cards in hand, so this could could be worthwhile. However, if we hit the Luna's Pocket Galaxy, we likely won't have the hand size to support it.
