Arrowhead has released the trailer for the next Helldivers 2 Warbond, Freedom's Flame, and to say players are excited is an understatement. The ability to dispense jellied gasoline to all the Bugs and Bots that dare cross your path sounds like a damn good time to the community, and to me.
The community response to Freedom's Flame is positive for the most part, with plenty of folks eager to awake their inner arsonist and get to work cleansing all those rightfully owned Super Earth land claims of their various invaders. (Native inhabitants.)
Some folks are already planning their power fantasies, dreaming of becoming even a fraction as biblically mint as the Salamanders of Warhammer fame.
With Helldivers already having a couple of fire related Stratagems on offer, with the Incendiary Mines and Napalm Strike Stratagems as some examples, some players are already preparing to fully adapt to an all fire build.
But what about folks who aren't quite as pleased with what's being shown here? Steam user Guardian_Angel made their opinions on the matter clear.
"I disagree. It's just another low-effort warbond that brings nothing fresh or impactful to the table. ... Primary and secondary flamethrowers that function identically to the stratagem one... OK. Why?"
Whilst this comment might seem harsh initially, there are some genuinely valid points raised here. Helldivers 2 has long been known for having needless additions that don't really expand on any core concepts in any way. There's been a lot of weapons added that are simply modifications of pre-existing weapons, and here with the new fire based shotgun this is even more egregious, as we already have a fire based shotgun.
Another user, hiits_alvin, also raises a great point by saying "kinda lackluster since flames are not good against bots?" which is entirely true. Flames are absolutely great against the Bugs, but against Bots made of you know... steel, they've never been quite as good. Unless there are some substantial changes made to these weapons or their interactions with the Bots, we might already have a case of the new stuff in this Warbond being useless in 50% of the content on offer, which is not something anyone wants, especially as we're still awaiting the release of the next major faction.
So with some generally positive community feedback, and some perfectly valid critiques raised, we'll have to wait and see how people feel about this new Warbond properly come release. Despite my hesitations and some of my frustrations with the direction Helldivers has been going in, I still find myself eagerly awaiting each new content drop, and this time is no different.
