Track Builder guide – Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged

Tips and shortcuts for track designs.

Like its predecessor, Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 comes with a powerful track-building tool where you can spend hours designing new circuits. However, if you are new to the game, you may find the short tutorial doesn't explain everything. This guide will help you understand how to navigate the track builder, how to unlock new track modules, and more.

How to build a track in Hot Wheels Unleashed 2

Before designing a new track, you need to choose the Environment where you will build. You can pick between these six:

  • Backyard
  • Mini Golf Course
  • Arcade Room
  • Gas Station
  • Dinosaur Museum
  • Track Room

If you are new to the game, I recommend you start with the Track Room. That is because it is just an empty room and it will be easier for you to design your track without having to build around any furniture. Once you are familiar with the track-building tool you can move on to more complex settings.

After you have chosen the environment, you will be taken to the actual track builder interface where you can begin construction. At any time you can switch between Construction mode, Modify mode, and Interactive Objects mode on the tabs placed at the top left corner of the screen. Use the right bumper and the d-pad on a controller, or the Left Shift and the arrow keys on a keyboard to switch between tabs.

Here you need to decide whether you are going to make a Circuit or a Course. The difference is the circuit is a closed loop and the course begins at one point and ends at another.

When you start a new track, the first piece you have to place is the starting line —you can choose a simple starting grid or a special one, such as the parking lot piece. After that, you will be free to add any parts you like to keep extending the track, and you will be able to pick from these three types:

  • Basic: these are your standard track pieces with walls, checkpoints, ramps, and invisible modules. You can also add plain loops.
  • Special: here you can find fans, tunnels, splits, and magnetic loops to keep the cars stuck to the track and be able to drive them upside down.
  • Animated: these pieces are generally moving traps that feature some kind of creature or boss, like a giant spider, a dinosaur or a shark, and usually act as a major obstacle for the competitors.

When you place standard pieces, you can curve them using the left and right analog sticks or extend them using up and down. You can also use the left bumper (or Left Ctrl on the keyboard) to raise or lower the track, and the right bumper (or Left Shift) to twist it.

The Roll offset allows you to choose if you want the twisting and bending to have its point of origin on one side of the track or in the middle.

Finally, if you think you've made a mistake, pressing down on your left analog stick or pressing Left Alt on the keyboard will reset the piece to its original shape.

Modify

You can edit the placement, length, turn angle, and color of the parts you have already added to your circuit. Just keep in mind that if you don't connect the piece you edit to the following one, the changes may not be saved. If you want to delete a part completely, you can use the shortcut LB + B on the controller or Ctrl + Z on a keyboard.

I find it best to build the whole track without customizing any of the parts, and later come back to them with the Modify mode and edit the color, walls, and all the details to my liking.

Bonus tip: you can test your track at any time from the exit menu, even if you haven't finished it. You are also able to change the test car and see how the track works for different types of vehicles.

Interactive Objects

Allows you to add checkpoints, speed boost triggers, boost charge bumpers, magnetic strips, etc. This doesn't limit you to the last piece you placed but rather lets you go back and place the interactive objects in any part of the track you like. These key shortcuts can be useful:

  • RB + LS (or L Shift + W or S) allows you to extend or shorten the interactive objects, such as making a magnetic stripe longer.
  • LB + B (or Ctrl + Z) deletes the current interactive object.

How to unlock new track modules in Hot Wheels Unleashed 2

Although the track builder comes with lots of parts from the start, new, special ones, can be unlocked as you play through the campaign Hot Wheels™ Creature Rampage and defeat enemy bosses. On top of that, the campaign will reward you with new track layouts for your quick modes. Whenever you see the icon of an environment followed by a number (such as mini golf 05) that means the level will unlock a new track layout.
