Beginner's Guide for Jagged Alliance 3

Whether you're a hardened Jagged Alliance veteran or a complete rookie, these tips and tricks will come in handy when the going gets tough.

Build a balanced squad

The key to your survival in Jagged Alliance 3 is starting with the right crew. Choose five mercs and keep around 10,000$ in the bank to spend on wound treatment, militia training, and equipment repairs. To start your game right, you'll need to recruit the following mercs:

  • Medic - Fox
  • Explosive expert - Barry
  • Mechanic specialist - Livewire
  • IMP Merc - Darwin Salazar

Once you've earned some cash, you should hire an additional medic with 50+ in medicine to aid you in more brutal clashes in case your first medic gets injured. Always renew merc contracts at a rate of 14 days to save up on the upfront cost and avoid losing mercs when you need them most.

Be stealthy

Avoid direct confrontations when unnecessary, especially in the early game. Scouting the area beforehand and taking out enemies using stealth will save your mercs' health and ammo; this is where mercs with high dexterity and agility will help you out. Weapon mods like the thermal scope or muzzle can help you stay silent but deadly during nighttime and at long range.

Watch your resources

To keep the money coming in, capture diamond mines as soon as possible. I recommend capturing the mines in the K10 and H7 map sectors first. The miners will become more loyal with every village you liberate, giving you more diamonds to sell and profit from.

Aside from cash, you'll need medicine to heal mercs in battles. Collect as many herbs as possible to convert them into meds, and check every nook and cranny in the area for herbs lying around.

Position your squad

In Jagged Alliance 3, firepower means nothing if your mercs are exposed to your enemy. Always split your squad into two groups and try to flank your enemy—that way, you avoid taking heavy losses if you get attacked by explosive weapons.

Remember to place shotgun mercs and explosive experts close to your enemy for maximum damage. Pistols and automatic rifles are most effective mid-range, while snipers should pick off enemies from the back.

Take cover wisely

Watch for cover spots such as crates, rocks, and vehicles when scouting the area, and plan your lines of movement accordingly. Cars provide the most cover, but they'll explode if set on fire, which you can use to your advantage and hurt your enemies.

To get maximum cover, always crouch or go prone, but remember your movement speed will be significantly slower. Don't stick to one cover spot for too long since it's only a matter of time until you get swarmed by grenades.
