Who is Sheik? – Zelda Lore

There is a lot more to Sheik than spamming unending combos in Super Smash Bros.

The nature of Sheik is one of the most often debated topics in the lore of The Legend of Zelda. After Sheik's appearances in other media like Super Smash Bros, it's hard to believe that the character only showed up in one game. Sheik is a descendent of the Sheikah people, though, who played a much bigger role in the history of Hyrule.

The History of Sheik in Ocarina of Time

Sheik first appears in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as a guide for Link. After he awakens as an adult, Link hears all of the Songs for Warping from Sheik, who plays them on his harp. These songs allow Link to warp from anywhere in Hyurle to one of the temples in the game.

Through his travels as an adult, Link encounters six of the seven sages: Rauru puts him to sleep in the Sacred Realm and reawakens him, and Link meets the other five after beating each of the five adult dungeons. Before fighting Ganondorf at the end of the game, Sheik reveals himself to actually be a disguise for Zelda, the Seventh Sage.

Sheik's Gender in The Legend of Zelda

The questioned of Sheik's gender is often disputed by Zelda fans. Typically, Sheik gets male pronouns assigned to him. Sheik also has a slightly masculine appearance. Despite all that, however, technically Sheik is female. The persona that we know as Sheik is only a disguise for Zelda, so if Zelda is female, then Sheik is female.

Will Sheik appear in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

There is almost no evidence that points to Sheik being in Tears of the Kingdom. The Sheikah race, though, play a huge part in both Breath of the Wild and presumably its sequel. They are responsible for building the Shrines in Breath of the Wild as well as the Sheikah Slate that Link uses.

The Yiga Clan is also a sect of the Sheikah who worship Ganon in Breath of the Wild. They have Sheikah clothing, except with red accents as opposed to blue. Impa from Kakariko Village is descendant from the Sheikah, which is why Link can buy the Sheikah Armor in Kakariko.
