You can't switch teams in Public versus mode in Minecraft Legends. Teams are made randomly, so you can only hope you'll get on the same team. You can circumvent this by creating a lobby open to the Public and joining only when your friend's team has fewer players. The game will automatically appoint you to a team short on players.
