How to craft a Boat in Minecraft

Prepare your sea legs with this boat-crafting guide!
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

There are lands upon lands waiting to be explored in Minecraft, but it’s not always easy to reach every biome. Since every world is randomly generated, you might find yourself trapped against a large sea of water. That’s where a boat comes in handy.

Swimming in water without a boat takes a long time and you can cut down travel easily with a boat. You’ll also be much better protected against dangerous sea mobs like Drowners. If you’re planning on finding the End Portal, you’re definitely going to need a boat to reach the End Portal stronghold.

How to craft a Boat

It’s super easy to craft a boat in Minecraft. Here’s what you will need:

  • 5x Wood Planks
  • 1x Crafting Table

Note for Minecraft Bedrock Edition Players: In addition to the 5x Wooden Planks and the 1x Crafting Table, you will also need a 1x Wooden Shovel to craft a boat.

To craft a boat, open your Crafting Table. Place 5 Wood Planks into the Crafting Table in the shape of a boat, as pictured above. 3 Wooden Planks should be lined on the bottom. 1 Plank should go in the middle row, in the left slot. The last Wooden Plank should go in the middle row, in the right slot. For Minecraft Bedrock Edition Players: place 1 Wooden Shovel in the middle row, in the middle slot. Now you have a boat!

Types of Boats

There are 6 different types of boats you can craft:

  • Oak Boat
  • Spruce Boat
  • Birch Boat
  • Jungle Boat
  • Acacia Boat
  • Dark Oak Boat

These boats adhere to the appearance of the specific wood that you chopped down and do not affect transportation. You can find these different wood types by exploring biomes and cutting down the trees that grow within the biomes.
