How to get a Totem of Undying in Minecraft

There are a handful of ways to get a Totem of Undying in Minecraft.

A Totem of Undying is a rare item in Minecraft that will prevent the player from dying. In other words, a Totem of Undying will prevent the player from respawning and losing all items, thus allowing the player to continue playing in the same area. This is useful for so many instances in Minecraft, like mining underground, fighting the Ender Dragon, or summoning and beating the Wither, just to name a few.

This item cannot be crafted and can only be found from one enemy: Evokers. However, there are two ways to find Evokers in Minecraft, which will get you a Totem of Undying. This guide will show you how to get a Totem of Undying in Minecraft, and how to use it.

How to get a Totem of Undying

Killing an Evoker mob is the only way to get a Totem of Undying. Evokers are spell-casting villagers that will attack the player on sight. Evokers have 2 attacks: Fang attack and summoning vexes. The Evoker’s fang attack is a ranged attack, in which fangs appear either in 2 circles around the Evoker or in a straight line toward the player. The Evokers will also summon vexes that fly around and attack the player until the vex is defeated. Evokers will always drop 1 Totem of Undying when killed, 100% of the time. It is best to be well-armed and equipped when preparing to hunt an Evoker, as the player will fight many more mobs along the way.

Evokers can only be found in two locations:

  • Woodland Mansions
  • Raids

Woodland Mansions only spawn in Dark Forest biomes or Dark Forest Hills biomes. These two biomes are often spawned very far from the spawn point. The player should plan ahead and prepare before taking on this journey, as it will most likely be time-consuming and dangerous.

Multiple Evokers can spawn inside of a Woodland Mansion. If this is your method of finding an Evoker, make sure to prepare with plenty of Enchanted weapons and armor to protect yourself from danger. While Evokers are your intended target, prepare to fight many mobs such as Vindicators, Skeletons, Zombies, Spiders, and Creepers. Not all rooms are well-lit, which is why these enemies spawn inside. Evokers also spawn during raids on Normal and Hard difficulty. Raids occur in villagers, and the player must enter with the Bad Omen status effect to trigger the event. On Normal, 1 Evoker will spawn during Wave 5. On Hard, a maximum of 5 Evokers will spawn between Waves 5-7.

How to use a Totem of Undying

For the Totem of Undying to take effect, the player must have the item equipped in either hand. This is the only way the Totem of Undying will work. If the Totem of Undying sits in the player’s hotbar but is not equipped, then it will not take effect and the player will die, losing all belongings.

The Totem of Undying can only be used once. After one use, it will disappear for good. Once used, the Totem of Undying will apply these status effects:

  • Restore 1 health
  • Remove all existing status effects
  • Grant 45 seconds of regeneration II
  • Grant 5 seconds of absorption II
