If you are a fan of anime or choose you're on adventure games, you've probably heard the term otome game thrown around before. This is a sub-genre of games that are currently seeing a growth in popularity in English speaking countries, thanks to several titles scoring high-rating

Otome games are a sub-genre of visual novels and fall under the dating sim category of games. Otome can directly be translated to mean young maiden and targeted gamers interested in romance novels with male leads. Many of the more recent ones are even fully voiced.

Like other dating sims, they often have multiple routes determined by the answers you choose during the game. You will also find that each route has different endings, leading to many players using a guide to figure out how to unlock all the art cards of their favorite characters.

How are they different from visual novels

Visual novels are basically digital books that are presented with both text and illustrations throughout the game's entirety. Many visual novels have only a couple of routes or no choices. A good example of this is the Danaganronpa games, which do have mini-games, but a static storyline.
